Sigma confirms 18-35 f/1.8 lens

Terrific news, I've had a number of shots recently where that extra stop and a bit (over T/2.9) would have been a big help.

Awesome news, great for wedding receptions where you often need a wide & fast lens but also the flexibility of a zoom.

If they can make this, I wonder if they can also make a FF 28-70 f/1.8 or similar?

I guess no: it is the fact that you only have to cover a smaller sensor that allows you to design a smaller, cheaper, faster lens that still has good IQ (of course, how good and how cheap this sigma is, we still don't know).

Think of point-and-shoot and bridge cameras: the Panasonic FZ200 has a 4.5-108mm f/2.8 (that range is 25-600 FF equivalent with f/2.8 constant aperture).

really cool! i guess the price will be somewhere near 2k or even 3K? wonder in what mounts this lens will be available though...

and what about a cine version hehe?

Thats why mft is a good sweet spot. If on,y they could make something as fast as this
Once the proper speedbooster arrives, it could be converted into a ~12-25 f1.2 zoom with MFT coverage. I can think of worse things.

Sorry, it -probably- won't cover m43 if you pair it with a speedbooster: only 2.1x (1.5/0.71) or smaller sensors. And it probably will be designed for short-flange mounts only, too, so it won't work on the BMC+speedbooster either. Just a guess, though.

Canon and Nikon mirrored dslr is sigma's bread and butter, I'm sure that's what its designed for. Speed booster to blackmagic pocket camera would be cool.

Missing out on Nikon and Canon APS-C market would be a huge loss for Sigma. Other than Sony and M4/3 what other APS-C or smaller cameras are out there in quantity to make business sense?

I wonder though, think there would be the added issue now of focus for those type of events? I suppose you probably wouldn't just be walking around/spraying 1.8 randomly all over the place; probably set up the 1.8 shots where you have the time etc to pull focus?

Yep, remains to be seen

Indeed. But they also make lenses for mirrorless cameras, like the great 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 that I use on my NEX, and that would not be possible (with this size, IQ and price) on a longer-flange-distance mount. We'll see.

The FF Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L zoom is $2,000 so I bet a FF 28-70 F1.8 would cost much more.

^ you must have gotten one of the good copies (there are bad ones too, and not just a few: that lens is a lottery!)
