SIGMA 50-500mm f4 Zoom Lens on a Nikon D3 or D7000 ??

Hello and Hi,

Has anyone ever used the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM SLD Ultra Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital DSLR Cameras on their Nikon D3 in still or video modes ?

If so, what do you think about it? Is it sharp enough at all zoom ranges? Does it have good glass? Is the f-stop controllable "outside" the lens? Have you connected a zoom motor to it and how does it function thus?

If you have used it on Nikon D7000, or any DSLR, I'd like to know what you think of that too.

Any experience with, or thoughts on this lens would be of great interest to me.

Hi George,

I have one but not with stabilization. I justy got it and really like it, for what it is. The image at 500mm is better than I was expecting. It also though, isn't anywhere near as sharp as my cheapie 18-55 kits lens. I have mine sitting on my tripod, resting on a Manfrotto 128LP so it has a "deck" there to support almost the entire foot. Auto focus is pretty good, as long as you are somewhere "in the ballpark". At least it is on mine, not sure about others. I have used it both with my GH1 and D5100, and both tripod only. When they say this weighs 4 pounds, they are not kidding !!! The weight of the cam is insignificant, compared to the lens. When you extend it out, you are pretty front end heavy. What I have seen with mine is at 500mm it isn't so much stabilization that's needed as it is something pretty stationary. If the lens varies 1 degree while shooting, at 500mm we are talking feet !!!

I am happy with mine and have no intentions of unloading it at this time. Seeing how I have done a lot of flipping and flopping with lenses lately, I think that says a fair amount for the Bigma !!!
