Siggraph '05 & Adobe

Been a pretty cool Siggraph this year - hope some of you have been able to visit it. I was talking with the adobe reps and it was confirmed that DVCproHD as well as other flavors of video/ h.264, MPEG4 will be fully supported in the next version of Premiere Pro which they were not able to confirm if it will be an update or full version upgrade but they hinted at end of the year release - Great news for the HVX and Premiere. Also, Axio is looking pretty sweet

That is good news, even though I use Vegas for software only editing... Premiere is now a solid program and Adobe knows how important this is...

Too bad Vegas went from being the first reliable software with DVX support to saying at NAB '05 ... "We'll have to evaluate customer demand for DVCproHD and prioritize features for the next release". Thanks Sony.

Did Adobe say that they'll fix the current 24p problems? How about support for variable frame rates?

Did not ask - it was kinda a zoo around their booth - but the variable frame rate support should be a part of the codec defined by panasonic - as is the case with the varicam currently in use - so I imagine it wont be a problem. As far as the 24p problem, I submitted a fix request on adobe's website like 6 MO ago - hopefully they will listen to us users.

yeah i was there this morning, It was pretty cool, Some interesting stuff in the Emerg. Tech. exhibit. The Virtual force feedback stuff was cool, the VR brownie (no idea how it got that name) was nice, specially since it was made by some 17 year old. Poser 6 looked pretty cool too.

I know its lame, but the best thing for me was finding this design magazine from Hong Kong called IDN... the thing is printed with a kick ass 7 color process and just looking at the pages was like geek porn.

Another company was demoing their film burner that could output a frame every 5 seconds and costs only $160K for everything you need - you can drop a quicktime into their software and burn out to film from that. They have another one that is $280K that will do a frame every .75 seconds as well. 3 Features will pay for it :) The Arri laser scanner was sweet too - but not at $480K !!!

Hey Jarred,

I just got back from LA. The E Technologies exhibit was smaller than before, but some of the things they were showing were incredible. What'd you think of the guy who used the two cameras and translucent screen to do image reproduction and manipulation? Right out of that Minority Report!

There was a company on the main floor that had a model of the Dalsa Origin camera in their booth. I stopped to look at the footage displaying on the screen. 4k playback on the monitor, by a 100k raid. The detail in the image was just incredible - better than film. Did ya see that?

Way cool things happening in Siggraph this year.

Do you remember the name of this company?

pwopalaka! thats great news. Im sure theve smoothed out the whole 24p thing as well. theres really no way around it now that just about every camera they will deal with has 24p abilities. ..and all the competitors are doing it.. and they knew about the bugs and how miffed people were.. im sure its going to be better now. at any rate.. the HVX support is very very very VERY VERY VERY good news.. that has me VERy excited. its a big relief. PPRO is a great app IMHO. and i absolutely DO NOT want to switch if i dont have to. ..i just want it to get even better. hope my 50 or so product requests over the last year about 24p and the hvx made a difference..lol.

Regarding Adobe, did they announce about After Effects supporting DVCProHD and H.264?

I only go to Sig when it is in New Orlean's....it been a few years now.
Mind frying show though...

Does not After Effects already work with DVCProHD? I'd be surprised if it didn't. Then again, I've never had a need for it before so I don't know anything about that topic.

I absolutely agree IAL.

..if AE doesnt happen to supprt it naitively (i havent ever tried or had reason to try in 6.5 pro) you could always use automatic duck to import DVCPRO-HD files to AE

SIGRAPH is so sad. It used to fill the entire LA convention center, now it only fills two thirds of the South Hall. There was very little innovation. mostly the same demonstrations of motion capture and 3D software that haven't change in the last five years.

Next year its in Boston (which is cool I've never been to Boston) the year after that its in Taft High School's gym. It was pretty pathetic. How'd you like to walk around with that Dalsa Origin on a steadycam?

The name of the company that has the inexpensive film recorders is Lasergraphics.com - Just so happens that they are 10 min from where I live :) The producer + is the lowest cost - but remember, this does not print the optical sound on the film - that is done when you make prints of the final film.

Hey, This was my first Siggraph so i dont know what it was like last year/'s but it was pretty fun.

I was running around doing media coverage for Toms Hardware...
