Sick of pulldown

OK JES de interlacer is nice, but the process of converting footage from the GH1 imo takes too damn long for 1080 24.

Does anyone here just skip the pulldown and put the 1080 footage straight on a 29.97 timeline?

to my eyes it still looks good, but on larger screens you can notice some interlacing - but i guess that can be fixed with a filter in FCP.

I'm thinking of just sayins "F-IT" to the pulldown. Not worth waiting a few hours for.

Any good tips/filters workflows people use for skipping pulldown? I think we all did this to some extent with the original DVX.

When you say say it takes forever to remove pulldown. Do you mean the pulldown itself without transcoding? Also what kind of computer do you use and what processor?

A couple of hours? How many minutes of footage are you doing?

This is where having a life comes in handy.

What's a few hours ? Go for a walk, do an errand, make out with your girlfriend.

:p.

Yeah NeoScene makes this a lot less painful. Set it to do more than one clip at a time (depending on how many cores your computer has) and make sure you're writing from one fast drive to another. I get 80fps+ this way.

I'll google that. To me the footage looks passable without the pulldown AFTER transcoding, but of course the motion will look better with it, but don't think it's a real shame to leave it ... transcoded 90mins of footage fri and JES got jammed a few times.

About how much faster is neoscene than JES?

pulldown removal sucks... and if the engineers could have just did what dvd players do and 'flagged' certain frames for their ntsc out.

They will face my wrath one day.

Yup! That way you get to spend extra hours on set dealing with a recording limit, swapping cards, an overheating camera, and doing take after take trying to get the shot right because you can't get focus on that tiny LCD.

I'd rather throw a few clips on a droplet and have a beer. Time spent watching a status bar move in post is totally easier than time spent fighting with a camera on set (and yes the Canon's aren't that hard to use but the GH1 is a total breeze).

That said the T2i is pretty nice. If the image were as good as the 5D or even the GH1 I'd get one.

Plus, I'll remind everyone that unless your hardware totally sucks, the whole shebang is still faster than capturing tapes :D

Since when is the t2i not up to GH1 quality? Looks better to me, at least the low light stuff.

I was more interested in your response to the billable hours thing.

As for the image quality thing? The T2i and 7D seem to have fewer lines of horizontal resolution than the GH1. The moire, etc, is just a symptom of that.

Ben... so what is your workflow that makes the GH1 a breeze, 1080 or 720? transcode? no transcode? or?...

Thanks,
George

I said it was a breeze on set :)

In post it is pretty easy too. I transcode the footage to ProRes, throw it on a droplet to remove pulldown, come back when it's over, and overwrite the old footage with the new.

It really depends on what your doing.

In my case, if I'm shooting an event outdoors, the T2i would give me a lot of torture. It can be hard enough trying to hold it while zooming with the 14-140mm lens, it would be even harder if it didn't have a fast constant auto focusing. Plus I love the freedom that the articulating screen me and with the T2i, I'd be severely restricted. What if I need to shoot above a crowd of people or what if I need to shoot close to the ground? The lack of articulating screen would drive me to insanity. For a lot of events I shoot, the 720 60p mode is ideal and from every report I've read, the GH1 is far superior to the T2i and the 7D when shooting in that mode. I like my images to be as artifact free as possible.

Just get neoscene - get the trial if you don't trust us. It is worth the money and renders the footage very quickly and unlike most cheaper transcoding apps, I have never seen it fail mid-render.

If you think that this is too much of a hassle, then maybe you should just shoot in 720p. But if you think that you can avoid removing pulldown, then I wouldn't want to be one of your clients.
