SHYLOCK... a fantasy short.... HVX and M2

Hey, gang.... here's another 48 Hour entry... shot on an HVX with an M2 adapter. I'm a relative newbie with narrative filmmaking... I was a photography guy in college. This is my second short... I shot and edited.

It was basically a one person camera crew... me... with a friend on boom. I decided to go for a shakey-cam/handheld look for the dialog shots... I'm not totally satisfied with the results... but, hey... it was an experiment! We (obviously) shot at a breakneck speed. I wish I could have spent more time with lighting and composition. The 48 Hour thing was fun, but looking back, I wish I would have just shot this normally... spent more time with it. :)

Anyway, I would love to hear the thoughts of fellow Panny nuts! CRITIQUE AWAY! :)

Sorry in advance for the YouTube haters...

seemed pretty good for 48 hours. seemed like the music never stopped playing though. that piano got annoying after the first couple of minutes.

Thanks, dudes! Like I said... I really with I would have just spent the energy doing it right...but for the amount of time invested, I'm happy.

TheComo- I used tungsten lights... white balanced for a warmer look, but I really didn't like what I ended up with. The shots were WAY too red. I CCed the shots using the 3-way Corrector in FCP. The actors both have very fair skin, and the wood in the cabin had a very rich color, which kinda gave it that "look". As for the scene file settings, I boosted the chroma and detail to probably 3 or 4... can't really remember. Everything else was left default.

Mickey... I can see what you mean, HA! The music was a last minute addition. We had a lot of bed music, but the piano was all original, so we went with it. It TOTALLY changed the tone of the movie from what we had originally planned.

Any other comments? I love being critiqued. Rip it apart... I've seen this thing TOO much... I need fresh opinions NOT from friends and family. What can I improve on?

you said it so here it goes:)

first off, congrats on a great movie. I couldnt; tell that this is your second short.

now then, the narrator's voice is completely out of place, he sounds like the discovery channel guy, which felt very informative, but not cinematic.

There is quite a bit of overacting. I would feel much closer to the characters if they internalized more of their intentions and expression. Seemed very staged.

The effect where we see his girl turn into a demon would have been a bit more effective had it been slightly quicker. This speed gave me too much time to see the special effect. The first millisecond it spooked me, but then i could clearly see the graphic.

At 3:18, you cut to a beautiful medium close two shot of the characters, and i wish you stayed on that shot, because it is more interesting than the long one and just looks great.

3:50 - Great shot and exposure. I found on the most part, your exterior stuff was slightly overexposed leaving the blown outs very videoesque. Try to preserve as much info as you can on the camera and if need be, use your levels to bring up the mids in post. Video looks not so great on the bright end of the spectrum.

The pacing was great, it didn't get boring and kept me wondering "Whats up with this girl"

otherwise, looked good!!

PaPa- Thanks for the critique! The narrarator bit was added for web viewing... it isn't on the final cut... I totally agree with you, though. I'll def. watch out for overexposing. The "porch scene" around 3:18... I see what you mean with the medium shots. I actually had a lot of lost footage for that scene... several other mediums and close-ups... there was a truck parked in the background that I didn't notice until I started editing. Huge time crunch + extreme hunger + several thousand mosquitos = rushing and bad mistakes. Ha! I was *slightly* annoyed. Another write off to the time limitations of the 48 hour thing... you live, you learn! :)

HappyGoBo- HA! I didn't come up with the character name... I asked the writer several times if he Googled it... we found out after shooting that it's a Shakespeare character.

Como- Yep... a warm white balance with the three-way corrector in FCP!
