shutting down the internet

Hmmm...I can see several ways of using this. Refer to my stuff on good and evil. Has anyone tried it? Just wondering...

It's tricky to set it up and it is SLOW, but it works...

I don't use it much, cause I got nothing to hide, but.. for example: i tried to open a youtube video and it says "Video not available for your country".

Well... it became available shortly after.. hahah.

Other options are, if you'd like to keep your anonimity in a blog or a forum, this helps, cause some people could trace your IP, identity and location.

And in such cases, things like Tor help, especially for countries with fragile democracy, like mine :(...

While that may be technically off topic, it's exactly why I feel they way i do about censorship, and frankly about life in general.

If you ask me, the two things we need more in life are Education and Empathy. Censorship destroys both of those.

Wow, I had never actually applied that thought process to this situation but it does work. If someone said f*** on TV, I would not be offended, but someone else might be. It all comes back to perception. Sorry, not to keep us off topic.

A little String Theory? ;) ok now we're definitely Off Topic lol
No...actually a little more close to home. A movie reference. Still no one? Haha.

sorry man, I'm ill and need to sleep now, I blame it on CP, he started it! :D

Oh, man! Sh*t rolls down hill and it always lands back on me!

---------------------------------

Also, thanks for the info on Tor karapetkov. I, too, have nothing to hide, and I don't live in a country with fragile Democrazy (IMO) - DAMMIT! Why does that keep happening? There is a difference between the Z key and the C key. It's called the X key. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD! - Sorry, sometimes I talk to myself when I do something stupid more than once in an hour time period. Now what was I talking about? Oh, yeah...I was just wondering how well it worked.

So now that this conversation has gone to philosophy, what do you think of envy in a relationship? Just kidding...

Off Topic (couldn't find the original thread about making money from the net):

Another possible way to make money on the net.

You still distribute your music and movies for free [free downloads], but the portals hosting it, and your download page includes banners\ad videos.

If the download portal is\becomes popular, it will sell the advertising space for more $$$.

If your band or movie download sub-page becomes popular, you could negotiate some separate income with a firm which wants to advertise there - banners, ad-videos, etc.

The ads will still be annoying, but hey, we gotta survive, right?

So... in this way, the content will still be free for download, but theoretically - you'll be able to get some income from it.

***

I gotta repeat that, for me, Internet piracy seems invincible.

Not iTunes, nor web-TV, nor anything can beat the free-of-charge stuff.

It will keep devouring the music and film industries until it kills them.

The only way is to lower prices dramatically or invent some way to get profit while keeping the content free of charge.

Whadaya think? :)

Isn't that basically one route people are trying to do now? Sites like Revver and Brightcove have ad based revenue sharing models w/content creators. The big problem is still getting enough traffic to make enough income to cover the costs of creating the content and hosting the video. A slightly smaller problem is when your video gets ripped and/or imbedded on other websites. For example, your video might go viral on YouTube but that puts no money in your pocket (or your portal's pocket) because people are watching it on YouTube and not Revver. Another problem is bandwidth costs (which is one reason keep why YouTube keeps the quality level at "craptastic"). The more popular the video the more bandwidth it eats up (talk about a double edged sword) which raises distribution costs and eats into the already small profit margin on the video.

Right. I know.

The problem here is that technology isn't there yet.

For this to work, we need high-speed Internet connection in every home or in most of the households.

Then, YouTube-type sites will practically become the portal, and what is now viral or illegal will simply become the norm.

If the site is p2p based, the bandwith increase won't be a problem, cause it will be handled by the connection of the users and not by the capacity of the central server.

Then, if you're a user - you pay your high-speed connection fee, then you go to your favorite movie or music portal and you enjoy everything for free, only having to endure the commercials and ad banners. The same like TV... but better :).

If you're content-creator, you go an upload your film on to the site. If you want it to be banner-free, you cancel the banners but don't get paid. If you want to profit - you gotta let the banners :).

The higher your viewers count - the higher you get paid.

If your movie is becoming popular, you might get smart and negotiate a contract with a specific company [for example: Coca Cola] which will want to put excusive banners and\or ad videos on your films' page -> $$$$ :).

Nice. I like fairytales.

Especially when they're likely to become true.
