Shutter speeds, the "ultimate setting?"

Hi!

I'm going to rent a HMC for a smaller job on an event. I know the main purposes with shutter speeds when it comes to slow motion and so on, in order to freeze a frame and not getting any motion blur.

But, if you shoot in 24/25p outdoors, what is the most common or best setting for the shutter?

Some say, you can use it instead of the ND filters. But if i use the shutter and not the ND filters to decrease the overexposure, i will get blown out whites no matter what, right? While the ND filters will take away any blown out parts in the picture..?

So, in my opinion, the only time when you are going faster than 1/60 is when you are shooting 50 fps to get a nice and more detailed slowmotion or still frame.. right?

So, should you mainly use the iris and nd filter controls to get a properly exposed picture, and in the last hand (for some reason) the shutter speed?

Thanks!

Yes you are completely correct. You should never be changing the shutter speed as a general exposure tool, unless you're going for a specific effect.

For general purposes on an HMC150, leave the shutter "off" and that will select a default speed that is video-appropriate (1/60 in 60i, 1/50 in 24p/30p).

Thanks so much for the answer, nice to know that I'm on the right track.

While we're on it- should I leave the HMC on the default setting with the scene files, or is the sweetpoint a specific scene file or modification combined with the default shutter and framerate?
