Shutter speeds in Progressive

Just got my PAL DVX100A and love the look of progressive. Just curious, in the manual it advises leaving the shutter speed off but by changing to 1/25 I get an extra stop. Is there any reason not to use 1/25 shutter speed in Progressive (possibly all the time, it is recording 25 fps isn't it?)
Maybe a naive question....

Re: Shutter speeds in Progressive

Two words: motion blur.
The slower the shutter speed, the more motion blur.
The faster the shutter speed, the clearer the image.
On the other hand, there's been a passionate argument here lately concerning the choppy look of the pans in progressive mode (especially on the PAL DVX).
I'm a PAL user and I use the progressive scan setting around 1/33. Seems a proper compromise to get both image clarity and un-choppy pans.

If you don't mind the way it looks with a 1/25 shutter, go for it! But Anartiste is right, you get more motion blur with it. For the "natural" look, though, you generally use a shutter speed that is double the frame rate, so for example, 25 fps would be a shutter of 1/50...with film (or what us NTSC DVXers 'should' use) is a shutter of 1/48, for 24fps.

When film is projected, the shutter clicks twice per frame, so to get the most "normal" look, you should shoot it that way too. The bottom line is though, if you like the look, and you like the extra stop of light, why *not* use it.
