Shutter speed

Can someone confirm this?

I am to understand that the once you lock down the exposure with AE-L, preventing it from wondering, that all I can control is the iris (aka fstop) manually on the lens and the shutter speed is locked at 24 fps by the camera?

No the shutter speed is not guaranteed locked at 1/24th. shutter speed is independent from frame speed (i.e. 24 frames per second) entirely.

I think if you follow the technique outlined in the FAQ using the AE-L Hold, a manual aperture lens and a light source you should end up with a shutter speed somewhere between 1/30th to 1/60th. I could be wrong since the D90 totally decides what to do all by itself (auto ISO and shutter speeds).

Yes, we do NOT have any info about shutter and ISO, even if locked them. Just we can sure about exposure if its a D or older lenses. What U see on LCD about shutter and ISO, they are not true data!

On a happier note, whatever the D90 is "deciding", it will decide the same thing if you preserve exactly the same circumstances. Your results are repeatable, even though you don't know the precise shutter speed or ISO setting. You can estimate shutter and ISO, of course, and some people on this site have already done so (though I can't recall the location of these posts - somewhere in the stickies I think). For ISO for instance, the approximation is:
f1.4-2.8 > 200-320 ISO
f4-5.6 > 400-640 ISO
f8-11 > 800-1200 ISO

ahh, sorry i misunderstood the question, what he said is correct
