Shutter speed you shoot at for a narrative?

What shutter speed is good for shooting with a DSLR in a narrative movie? I want a good balance between sharp picture and smooth motion. I've been shooting around 1/50 for most shots, but I am getting a faster lens and was wondering if shooting at faster shutter speeds is going to make my picture a bit too choppy.

Thanks for the input.

Shoot 1/50 if you're shooting 24p. 1/50 emulates the 180 degree shutter of film cameras. Some lights, like fluorescents, might demand 1/60 to avoid banding.

There's really no reason to change your shutter speed beyond that, unless you are going to slow your footage down considerably and use Twixtor in After Effects.
