Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

And that's exactly what film would look like too.

Your "handheld like a crackhead" comment was right-on... move the camera too fast and it'll strobe and jitter, just like a film camera would. You have to pan SLOWLY if you want the motion smooth.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

While I can hardly add anything to Barry's comments..

I would say his advice stands valid for all progressive cameras, whether 25P (PAL) or 24P(NTSC). there are NO specific issues related to the PAL camera in this regard...I can assure you. They all behave similarly...when in the progressive mode.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

Where do you find these shutter speed settings???

Is it the Sync Scan thing thats set to 1/48? It changes by the decimal.

Is that the shutter speed thing you all are talking about?

thanks

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

The shutter speed is set by using the two "shutter" buttons inside the LCD panel (below the menu joystick). The Synchro Scan is another shutter option, it lets you dial in an exact shutter speed, but you cycle through the shutter speeds by using the shutter buttons.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

there is a 1/48 preset on mine, i've never had to dial it in manually ???

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

..it is the default shutter speed for the 24p modes. and you can access it by cycling through the preset shutter speeds by pressing the shutter speed button.

however, you will notice that when you are using 1/48th for shutter, it lists 1/48.0 as the shutter speed instead of just 1/48. so the preset for 1/48th uses synchro scan to achieve the speed automatically.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

...Actually, the default shutter speed in 24P modes is 1/50, not 1/48.

Not that you'd notice the difference, but most film cameras in fact shoot at 1/50...

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

[tt][/tt]Barry you are the best!! thanks

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

I just saw my monitor after shoot tonight- having read this tutorial only recently and realized the 24p motion looks less choppier in 1/43 than the popular 1/48. and I was really happy about that. but I am making a comment because I don't like the look of 1/24- which looks like it's about to melt.

thank you.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

I want to make sure I have this shutter speed down.

If I want to shoot in 30p the only choices I have are: off which equals 50fps. Or on which defaults to 60, and I can press the speed select button to get between 60/100/120/250/500/1000//2000fps. I could go into the Menu/Camera SetUp/Syncro scan to manualy dial in anything between 60.1 to 200 fps.

If i want to shoot in 24 I can get from between 24fps up to 200.

Why is there not a speed selection on 30p for 30fps??

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

First you want to be careful with your terminology: nothing you're selecting affects the fps, which is an abbreviation for "frames per second". You're talking about selecting the shutter speed. The frames per second is fixed in stone by what mode you choose to shoot in: 24P = 24 frames per second, 30P = 30 frames per second, 60i = 60 fields per second.

There is a 1/30 setting for 30P.

Oops... your right. Shutter speed then. So how does one get the 1/30 shutter speed when using 30p??

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

Just like any other shutter speed. Press the "shutter" button so that it doesn't say "shutter off", it'll say (usually) 1/60. Then press the "speed sel" button, and it'll go to 120,250,500,1000, synchro-scan, then 1/30.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

Thanks for that answer. Now I've got another one.

I've messed with the shutter speed in Camera setup and now when I'm looking in the view screen I notice something that wasn't there before (I think). It is the shutter speed and says on top STD and below that 1/60.3. How do I get this to not show or for the shutter speed to be set to the way it was?? Thanks!

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

STD means that you're in standard auto-iris mode (as opposed to backlight or spotlight).

The 1/60.3 means you're in synchro-scan mode. Just press the SHUTTER button until it says "SHUTTER OFF". That'll put you back in default mode (1/60 for 60i or 30P, 1/50 for 24P).

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

I have shot about 20 minutes in 24pa, same location ( inside a warehouse, studio lighting ), different days
After wotking on FCP4, I discovered to my horror that half of what I shot had video stuttering real bad.
questions
1) is the part with stuttering salvageable?
2) why is there half of the film without stuttering?
3) was it due to a change in shutter speed? ( I don't remember what I did different! )
4) other advices?

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

It definitely does sound like a change in shutter speed - if you were shooting in 24PA the whole time, that's the only thing I can think of that would induce the motion differences.

Could you post a short clip of the before-stutter and after-stutter problems? That'll be the easiest way to tell if you don't know what you were set at while shooting.

Re: Shutter speed tutorial...

Hi,

If I set synchro-scan for 1/36, I'm setting the shutter at 1/36 or it only works for sync a monitor ? I mean, is the synchro-scan useful to set a intermediate shutter speed ?

Thanks,
Ulisses
