Shutter Experiment Advice

Hi All,

Experimented some with shutter speed for the Gladiator look while we were testing our body mics this weekend.

Would appreciate advice feedback on manipulating shutter speed for that heightened senses action look.

Thanks -- this forum rocks, my learning curve is officially on an astral trajectory.

Working on how to save as an older version of QuickTime and as windows media player so my clips will be more viewable.

Thanks again.

says I can't play because of missing software that's not available on the Quicktime server.....

How can I fix that?

I have quicktime pro latest version (7 I think) which I am learning is the most incompatible way to post clips. I would say that I need to post it with an older version of quicktime or with windoze media player... but you've been able to view my stuff before ... hmmm ...

I didn't quite get the effect you were looking for. Two reasons... 1) maybe you didn't crank the shutter enough... 1/500th?? 2) maybe QT7 on PC doesn't play the best frame rate and I was just missing the stuttering.

Kinda sucks, that guy taking it in the jaw so many times...

hehe

I also didn't really see the effect. It looked normal speed to me. Sorry, but I liked the tapping sound. It was like a poor mans Stomp.

This effect is really accentuated by flying sweat, dirt, dust, blood, long hair, etc. etc. etc. Also, extreme close-ups of fast moving things helps. Push the shutter as high as you can get it, get back and zoom in a little to make the DOF smaller. Want to really sell it, have some flying sweat or blood...

I noticed the effect. Looks good! What was your shutter speed?
I don't think it was super cranked. I think it was actually just 250 or 500, and its not as noticable in this compressed version.

Vlc Media Player Works

Hey Guys,

For the love of God, throw your quicktime in the trash..it's a sad excuse for a media viewer :thumbdown (hey..I'm a Mac guy through and through and even I think this).

Try this instead...

the vlc media player has never let me down..and I can hear and see his clip no problem using it. Good luck!

By the way, the shutter looked great when you zoomed out on the backpack. If I could make a suggestion, perhaps the ramping of that shot could be increased a bit to make the zoom more intense. Good work!

I could tell it was shot with a high shutter speed like 1/500 but it still didn't have the "Gladiator" look that you are going for. Maybe speed it up just a tad bit too. Play it at 110% maybe..

As I said, I'm just figuring out compression stuff. Looked at your link breifly and there didn't appear to be any English language download sites for OSX. Will look again when I have more time. Thanks for the link.

Thanks Angrius, Serius Doggy and Big Magic.

Thought about trying it a little faster Serius, will try. Can you randomly pick a number like 110% since its such a subtle variation or does it have to be divisible by 24 or factors of 24?

Yeah, Angrius, it does look better when zooming on the back pack, or on the punches when the camera moves counter to the direction of the punch.

Shot some stuff at 1/1000th but I'm gearing up for a 72 hour film contest that starts tomorrow so I'll have to wait to post. But hopefully as of Monday, I will have a whole new short and hopefully whatever genre my team is assigned will lend itself to having some fun with the camera and this effect in particular.

We did some test footage for an action film that I was doing for a class.
In Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan when they do that jitter effect, it's something that they do with the angle of the shutter, and they may overcrank it a but. Since that's not possible with video, we have to crank up the shutter speed to imitate it.

For our test footage, we cranked open the iris, and stepped back and zoomed in for a more shallow DOF, and made sure to let the camera shake (we found that it accentuated the effect) then we cranked the shutter up to 1/500 to 1/1000 and let her rip. We did a little color correction to make it darker but we liked what we got. By no means are we experts, but it came out pretty well.

Fight Test Footage (1MB)

I also did some more 'jitter cam' stuff that you can see on my website in the form of a n outtake reel. It's a couple of guys playing basketball. It's kinda huge (22MB) but I had more space to work with to decrease the DOF.

American Dreams Outtake Reel

Hope that helps!
