Shutter closes while recording HD on D90 before 5 Minute Max????

For some reason my shutter keeps closing while i'm shooting high definition video and it usually is within a minute of the start time. I'm pretty new to the DSLR, i just got a month ago, but I can't figure out why it's doing this...I put the camera in "Auto" mode, which figured was normal since there are not any manual controls for video. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks Casey

My mirror does this sometimes. And I format my card often. But sometimes my mirror close when I don’t record. And then I have to redo the exposure settings and its very annoying!

same here. for a while i thought it was due to overheating but it doesn't seem to be related, then i though maybe i touched something, but that doesn't seem to be the case either. it's never happend while recording though, except for the reasons mentioned.

When the mirror is left open for a while, dust can accumulate on the sensor. The camera automatically closes the mirror and cleans it when there is too much dust.

really? that's pretty cool. how does it do that and why isn't there an option to turn it on and off in the sensor cleaning settings, or is there?

Yhea first I thought, cool. But it isn't! It sounds stupid! where did you read this? I mean the mirror is up all the time and under the live view and under d-movie mode. And wear is all the dist coming from? And is there a separate processor to read live, read out what’s dust on the censor?

too many men. i'm usually not very fond of pointing out differences between men and women, it's counter productive since my vision is a world where we have equal rights and opportunities, but women do smell better, and by magic they make men smell better too when they're around. we used to call them air fresheners on the snowboarding circuit, which stinks more than this board. :-)

True but there is a distinct smell here that I haven’t smell for a while. I'm glad I don’t have to use those air refreshers at work/on set. ;)

I didn't read this anywhere, it's just an observation I noticed when using it.

The dust and dirt comes from the air when you change lenses. Wikipedia entry. Liveview/D-Movie Mode will expose the sensor longer for dust to settle in, that's one reason why some Photographers hate the feature.

What I'm not too sure on is how it detects the dust.

If I leave the D90 dial on [with liveview off] for a long time, then turn on liveview, I can guarentee it will always cut liveview off quicker than if I had left the D90 dial off. One reason I can think of is because I set my d90 to automatically clean the sensor with the on/off dial, but if I don't use it for a long time, maybe the engineers installed a timer for it to automatically clean regardless after a few hours and I'm just unlucky to have liveview turned on?

The other option is there's a readout that can sense optimum range the temperature and the charge of the sensor.

I refuse to believe I have a dodgy camera or dodgy memory card, as it doesn't interfere with me taking a photo or when I'm actually recording a video.

So why are you pointing out this theory of yours like you actually know something about this? I think it’s a lot of ***. There is no pattern at al. and exactly, you haven’t figure it out, how the camera detects the dust but you tell other people it dose. That’s fantastic! And you think that dust remover actually works in that scale and remove the dust when it shuts down like that and then it works again? Wow... :D

Good night boys!

Okay, first of all, your attitude is the thing here that stinks.

My first answer to the OP was one suggestion, and that worked. If it didn't, then I would have asked for more information and offered another suggestion.

Your reply was more vague. You're saying you 'sometimes' can't record for more than a minute, and your liveview randomly turns off? This could be any number of reasons: heat, memory card(formatted or not), a faulty battery, a camera whatever. Go to Nikon support if you think it's that serious. It'd be alot more constructive than calling me smelly, no? ;)

In suggestion about the dust, maybe I really should have put a question mark at the end instead of a full stop? I was replying to Mattsand's suggestion that it wasn't heat related, so off the top of my head I could only guess battery related or some form of obstruction to the sensor ergo dust. When he replied back "Really?" I was going to jokingly reply back "Nope, just guessing :D" but the way you replied back how dust couldn't have come from anywhere, that it is a stupid idea, was waaay too tempting to blame all the answers on 'magic'.

Aaah.

I agree about martin's attitude, but you did actually come across as if you had some new inside information. I think you should always indicate very clearly if you're speculating, or even making informed guesses. If for no other reason to increase the credibility of the real information. It really pisses me off when people doubt me when i know i'm right, which believe it or not is every time i say something, and the reason they rightfully do is posts like yours.

I’m sorry for my bad attitude. I didn’t mean to be rude! But mattsand said. It really sounds like you had some facts there. I'm here to learn about things I don’t know. Not to make lifelong friends ORE enemies ;) But the last thing is not to be rude ore have to read stupid things about film technique that people made up them self’s. Ok?
