Shure Beta57 as mic?

I'm doing a short memorial type of video for my department, and there is no budget, so I have to use what we've got. I'm good on the video part, but the audio is tripping me up, primarily because I do a TON of work in recording studio's, but haven't done any real video work yet, and the methods are very different.

I have an NTG-2 shotgun, but with everyone saying to use hypercardiod mics indoors, I am wondering if I would be better off using a Shure Beta57? We use them a lot for performances, but I don't know if it will be better than the NTG-2 for interviews.

If we were to use the beta57, should we "boom" it above the person talking? We would be putting it on a mic stand, there wouldn't be anyone holding it, so aiming of that or the shotgun mic would be the same.

I'd appreciate any input you all might have.

AFAIK the Beta is a stage mic and needs to be about 8 inches from the person's mouth. Not really suitable for booming

The 57A is a dynamic, and the NTG1/2 are usually not bad indoors, so I'd defintely go with the NTG-2 over the 57A.

I would recommend the Rode NTG-2 unless the project will allow him to actually talk into the microphone. If not Rode is going to be your best bet.

Just go with your NTG-2 microphone for everything. Your Beta57 isn't going to pull it, unless you use it as a podium mic. Even then, it doesn't look like an official podium mic.

Besides having to be only 8" or so away, 57's an d 58's typically do not have enough gain for going straight into the camcorder. I know on my HVX they don't.
