Actually, just checked and there is a new Cavision 3x3 with much more compact 15mm mount.
Now if only someone had the clever thought of manufacturing some 3x3 adapter plates for screw-on filters. ;)

That would be me.
I'm adapting my screw-in filters into plates that I will slide in a custom mattebox. All 3D-printed.
Designed for minimal size. The micro-matte-box clips on a cokin P adapter ring. I may think of selling it if I like the final design.
Downside: screw-in filters have to be disassembled, and the glass glued on to the tray adapters.

Shut up and take my money! :D

Interesting. I am not particularly keen on clip/clamp on matte boxes, but I can see this working.
But if this is custom designed you should be able to design it so that there is enough free space between filter stages to accommodate filters screwed on adapter plates, no?

That is the big problem. Lots of screw in filters are too thick for filter trays once adapted. the treads are on one side so they don't sit in the centre. If you were going to make an adapter it should be friction fit instead of using the threads.

The vocas tray for 3x3 and series 9 is a great place to start designing a solution.

My design currently takes 3 trays with disassembled screw-in filters, or just one with a non-disassembled filter.

The glass is around 2.5mm thick, the filter, with the front and back threads, is nearly 10mm (from memory; may be a bit less, but it's too thick for this to work with more than one filter on a wide-angle lens).

I'll give it a few hours this weekend to try to finish it, then start a thread here somewhere...

(the biggest challenge is designing the pieces so that they are strong and are printed cleanly; definitely not as simple as it sounds; 3D-printing is way more artisanal than I had anticipated)
(BTW: I'm not following any standards, this is for myself; the tray is thinner than standard 3x3 or 4x4 trays, and has a size of 90x90mm, which I thought would be the smallest that could accomodate glass from 77mm filters; I don't see the point in making this compatible with standard 3x3 or 4x4 filters, since those are expensive and what I'm trying to do is to get a quick way to swap cheap filters)

I love Series 9 filters. They sell on ebay for far cheaper than comparable sizes. The glass, itself, is exactly the same size and interchangeable with the glass in an 82mm filter. My matte box is an 85mm clamp-on style and Series 9 holders are 85mm in diameter so the matte box can clamp directly onto the Series 9 filter holder.

Just throwing out an idea for those people trying to find a cheap way to try out filters.
