Show Me Your Bag

For my new HVX + Firestore, I'm leaning towards the Porta Brace DVO-2U Organizer case:

I was also considering the Tamrac 2249 Sub Compact Camcorder Shoulder Bag:

and the Petrol PDB-1N Duffle Bag:

Looks like the Porta Brace will do the job. Specs also suggest I'll be able to use it as carry-on (always depends on the airline though...). The Porta Brace website has a nice 8x10 pdf showing the inside of the bag; just zoom in on the overhead shot: http://www.portabrace.com/pdfs/class_a/dvo-2u.pdf

Anyone else using this Porta Brace? Suggestions on best pricing/dealer for this DVO-2U bag? Thanks.

Cees,

At the Porta Brace site you can click on a "see full list" link of cameras covered for this bag - the hvx is mentioned there. And yes they offer a black version with red trim.

The CS-DV4U you mention looks good also - including safety of the gear inside I also take into consideration the ability to carry-on as well...the CS-DV4U might be pushing it a bit. I'll look in to it though...thanks.

We own a DV4U and it fits the HVX fine + some extra batteries and 1 charger. If you want something to hold other accessories (matte box, Firestore or P2 Store, etc...) it'll be tight.
Another consideration is a hard case. IF you travel a lot for your shoots you should consider a hard case.
Just do a search under the hardware section and you'll learn all you need to make a smart choice.

John J,

Sorry you are right, it is also sitable for the HVX. What I like about the DVO 2U that it is more save for you cam when it is open (less change that your precious HVX200 faals out). The CS-DV4U opens also on the sides till the bottom if you understand what I mean while the one you suggest only open at the top. So maybe you picked the best :-))

Alex the DV4U you find tight? I'm looking to store the HVX, Firestore, couple batteries, P2s, wireless mic transmitter/receiver, ME66 mic (already mounted), cell phone, cigars...that's about it. From the dimensions and looks of the DVO-2U I thought it could do the job.

Checkout the Rolling Gear bag from Setwear. I got one of these for $75 and cut a piece of foam for the inside inside and went travelling with my HVX, 3 batteries, 4 P2 cards, battery charger, the remote, some tapes and still had room to spare. It was great in airports as it is on wheels with a pull out handle. I could carry it on the plane and put it in the overhead locker. The picture on the website has it loaded up with tools so it's a bit hard to appreciate it's capabilities.

I think the DVO-2U is the best option Porta brace offers. I would not put such expensive equipment in a bag of $75 !!!!

John J., did you check if the HVX with shotgun attached fits in the DVO-2U ???

This bag was freee to european HVX buyers. Made very well. Don't know the cost but probably $200 plus. Its made by Kata.

I'd really like a bag that is big enough to carry the HVX with the matte box, follow focus, Marshall monitor and rods attached. This wouldn't be used for air travel but simply placing the bag on the back seat going from point "A" to point "B"... from one shoot setup to the next. Any users of this set up that have found a viable solution?

Get a cardboard box big enough, lag it with sponge foam and place the camera setup inside. Then seatbelt the box in place incase you need to use your brakes hard or get pranged by another car!

Yes. That's what I think.
I've been using it though.

It's a good tight fit for the camera and some stuff, but if you want to have all your accessories in the same bag, most of them will be on the side pocket and there's no padding or any extra protection other than the external layer.

Again, the camera fits without a matte box and rails. I’ve tried and it didn’t work.

My gear is surprisingly similar to your set up. 1 shotgun mic (always mounted) the G2 wireless set, 4 extra batteries, charger, P2 store, one monopod (which fits really well at the bottom of the side pocket), and little ins and odds. No cigars...
I've just purchased the Matte Box and that changes a lot.

I’ve never tried the DVO-2U, but it looks even smaller.

I’m seriously considering a hard case to be able to fit the camera with the Matte Box + some accessories and a 2nd case with all the extra stuff.

Alex,

I ordered the DVO-2U from B&H today - should be here later this week. I'll let you know how it turns out. Eventually when I get more peripherals for the hvx (matte box, Marshall, etc...) a hard case will be next.

Actually, I do this when I'm out skating with my camera - a cardboard box packed with foam in a backpack. Gasp! Yes I skate with my HVX200!! You can get amazing tracking shots.

That aside, I have the Kata case from the european offer and a pelican 1510 for traveling with ;)
