Shoulder with 7" monitor

Who out there uses a camera in a shoulder mount rig, but also monitors with a 7" monitor? (no EVF, no gratical etc)

I'm just about to buy a new monitor for use on a project where i'll mostly be on my C100 in a shoulder rig configuration. No matter which way I slice it i'm going to need a new monitor.

I've had great success using a SmallHD 502 but i'm tired of renting.

In looking for a new monitor i'm very interested in either a SmallHD 702 Bright or a Atomos Shogun Flame to use as my main monitor.

I'm slightly concerned with how big they are. Does anybody ever use a 7" monitor in front of their face in a shoulder mount situation? Is that crazy? Does it ever just get in the way?

Some of the reasons that have led me to this is that I wear eye glasses and have had some trouble seeing things in focus in the past. The 502 worked great but i'm wondering if a 702 would be even better and help me see focus etc even better, or if it's going to be overkill and more pain than it's worth.

If SmallHD had a 502BRIGHT i'd probably just get that, but since they don't i've been more interested in the 7" monitors for their brightness.

Any input would really help out.

Thanks! :)

Half word. Yep lovely to exclude the sun but also sometimes you want to see the approaching ball/crashing race car or whatever is about to hit you :)

I think 7 is a bit big -= Id go for 5 if at all possible - the black tragic might work.

There's only a handful of 5"/1500NIT+units. The choice shouldn't be too difficult. Although, I will say you could be gambling on the SmallHD 703 if that's what you choose.

How exactly do you that with a monitor, & hood, blocking your view? The OP did specify a shoulder configuration.

Back when it was trendy I had to use a 7D with a 6.5" Daylight-viewable Marshall a few times, & hated it. The monitor blocked my view, & upset the rig's balance.

With a Viewfinder all that's needed is to open the other eye to see what's around.

I have a maybe 3 in deep hood (laser cut ply!) - which I can see round and a neoprene 'sock' that I can add and properly bury my face if I have to.

Unfortunately EVFs, at least for the type of project this will be, have been problematic for me. I wear glasses and it just never, ever works. And because of my astismatism if I wear contacts I can't see an EVF screen that is that close.

Why am I "gambling" using a SmallHD 702?

Thanks for the responses, everybody!

Just because you have an astigmatism, doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to wear contacts and shoot with an EVF. I wear contacts and used to have an astigmatism(our eyes change over time and fortunately, mine have "corrected"/changed shape and I no longer have an astigmatism). Yes, the contacts suck because if they shift and don't sit just right, it screws with your vision, but it can be done. I shot for probably the first half of my career with toric lenses looking into an EVF. But to be completely honest, the first few months that I wore them, I would take my right eye contact out and just correct with the diopter when I shot sports. Also did the same several years ago after eye surgery in my right eye, because I couldn't wear a contact in there for a while afterwards.

Just to chime in, even though my current avatar shows me using a 7" monitor on a shoot from last year, I really hate that setup. The only reason I was using it that day was because the EVF was out for service. I don't like having the screen in my face and it sets the rig balance off a bit.

The EVF isn't just about light-tight monitoring; it's also about an extra point of contact for shot stability.
