I saved up my pennies for a follow focus, finally!
I'm now thinking maybe a combination that I can throw
on my shoulder and still place on sticks. Anyone have any
experience or ideas for some inexpensive add ons?

IndiSystem shoulder rig

Indisystem (indisystem.com) has a nice variety of shoulder rigs, matte boxes and related gear for very reasonable prices. I'm very happy with the gear I bought from them. I can drop my shoulder-mounted AF100 directly onto the tripod with the supplied mounting plate.

Hey DTZfilms,

Take a look at this thread here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?263151-Vocas-or-Redrock-rig-for-AF-100-Need-advice.

8 posts down I posted a couple custom AF100 shoulder rigs that I built for some customers. Anything that has our shoulder pad can snap right onto a tripod as our shoulder pad has 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 screws on its dovetail.

Which follow focus did you decide on getting? I saw you said Redrock in your thread title, but wasn't sure if you decided on getting one of our units like our microFollowFocus Blue or microFollowFocus V2.

I have the Blue in mind.

I've got a 4-yr old IndiFocus system that works well for me. Carbon rails, two handles, baseplate, and shoulder pad. I think it is similar to the IndiRailsPro XVsm that they offer now.

I looked at Redrock Blue and here are the prices.
If I forgo the whip set and crank at $208
I'm thinking use that money saved for the shoulder rig instead - maybe a used crank/whip later on.
Do people really use those much - the crank and the whip?

Anyway, I'm looking at:

Baseplate $249
12" 15mm Carbon fiber rods $89
Follow focus $795
Lens gear kit $178
Total: $1311

Trying to do this without breaking the bank. So what else am I adding onto this to make it
shoulder-proof? The shoulder pad? Are the rails long enough or do I need longer?

If you want to make it more shoulder-ready, I would say get 18" carbon fiber rods, or the microShoulderMount Deluxe Bundle. You can add counterweights eventually to make it easier on the arms, but how do you plan on monitoring? Do you have an external monitor, or will you be using onboard solutions? All important things to remember when building a system. One of the nicest things about the Redrock gear (besides its lifetime warranty), is that you can really build any rig for any production situation and count on them no matter what.

As for the follow focus accessories, get them down the line, if you're operating and pulling focus yourself it may not be immediately necessary.

Planning to use onboard, either EVF or the LCD. I guess - I'm trying to get a "swiss army knife" configuration.

For now repeatable focus is the most important. So I think ITEM A might be the starting point - the one with the offset so I can use onboard EVF/LCD.
So what do I have to order to get this setup? I think 18" rods would work if I intend to eventually get the mSM deluxe bundle, but for that price ($568) I can
also get the zazaslider ITEM B ($425) as well which doubles as a slider and shoulder mount.
Thus I'd have my swiss army knife - a tripod ready, slider-capable and shoulder-ready configuration with a follow focus.
I'll also eventually get a matte box. . . So maybe I need 18" anyway? Anyway what's my initial shopping list to build this rig?
Thanks for your help!

I did some more window-shopping folks and I'm near to pulling the trigger on this http://www.indisystem.com/indirailspro-xvsm/ at $269
couple this with a redrockmicro followfocus complete package at $803 and I think that should cover me at $1072! The only problem I see is
not having the offset of the redrock micro. What do you guys think?
