Shoulder mount/ Handheld rig

Hi all,

apologies if this has been asked before. Can anyone recommend a good shoulder mount for the HVX200 or a handheld rig that would allow you to operate the camera for a good length of time, without knackering yourself out.

I can second David's recommendation of the MultiRig. I shot with a prototype version this summer (if you check out www.dvtec.tv and look for the MultiRig shots, you will even see me with the prototype-- I'm the ugly guy with the attractive HVX) and just got a production model.

I also have the DVRig Pro and find that another excellent but larger alternative.

Hello Pedge,

For what it's worth, I was playing with a Zacuto rig last week. It is awesome! If you ask Steve Wiess at Zacuto really nicely, he will even hook you up with the hardware to offset the camera so that you can use the eye piece. It's a pretty big rig though so you may be more inclined to do something like was suggested previously. Here's a link.

.....it IS a big rig... I have SOME of the things in those set ups... and it's already quite weighty... I've been trying several different configs to make it work better for me....including using a combo of the Zacuto stuff and the DVRig Pro.... results are inconclusive...and I just cannot get used to any kind of hand grip solution.... it just doesn't feel natural to me.

Can you tell me exactly how the F100 fastens to the Multi Rig Pro? I'm looking for a shoulder/handheld rig - right now I use FE's Firestore hotshoe mount with lav receiver clamped to the HVX's hand strap. Do you feel confident the FS100 is completely secured to your Multi Rig? Thanks.

Yeah, I feel very safe with the Multi Rig Pro. It comes with an accessory plate that has some bungie type straps. Look carfully at how they're on there when you first take it out of the box. You'll re-wrap them the same way. Holds my FS-100 just fine!

Then I use velcro straps I got from a local music store. They're sold in music and computer stores for cable management. They're a few inches long and about 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide. Use those to secure the Firewire cable.

Also notice the LCD and EVF are both really easy for me to see. In this config, I set both of them to stay on at the same time. Very nice. I can let go with either hand to do camera adjustments and I don't loose any balance. Very nice!

This rig is looking more like the one for my purposes, especially with the additional grip mounts seen at their website for lights, mic, etc.

Will take some time for me to move my Firestore from it's hardcase shoe mount on the HVX handle to the back of my shoulder with bungie cables - can't see if it's on / off, recording...somebody's gotta have a better answer. Overall the Multi Rig Pro seems to have the extras I'm looking for. Does it also need / offer a weight for the back where you fasten the Firestore?

No counter weight, it uses Center of Body Weight. See how the handle is tilted across my back towards my neck? This is cause there's no counter weight, just my own body's center of gravity.

I hook it all up, test, as always the FS is kicking in properly when I hit the HVX's record button, and I've quadruple checked all settings, I trust the thing to rock and roll when I hit that record button. Hasn't failed me so far.

It all demands such special treatment, just remember to be "subtle".

Spider Brace, I have a great deal of respect for, well, this just takes that same concept to a whole new level.

You can mount the acc. plate on any of the front grips so you can have it in your sight all the time. all that is needed is supplied with the kit.

I know, but I like it back where it is. I don't have a need to look at it once I'm set up. It's just too reliable to bother with looking at it all the time.
 
We are working on a counter balanced shoulder solution for the Brevis that will work with our new rail system. Adding an adapter, follow focus and matte box definitely biases weight fairly far forward and requires a bit of creativity on the design side.

What exactly was uncomfortable?

In few weeks we will offer a special bracket for "front heavy" setups and a additional spring for the support pod to better handle the extra weight.
