Should there be a vote on what hack feature Vitaly and the others should concentrate?

Hello fellow Gh13ers!

I just wanted to share my thoughts:

I feel that the hack is at a point where image quality in avchd is already insanely good, a fast card provided. As far as I get it Vitaly is concentrating on understanding the codec better to up the bitrates in lowlight scenes (correct me if I´m wrong).

While this would be awesome as well I have to admit that after ten days of shooting hacked I only really missed a live monitoring for focussing. Then I thought that others could be more interested in 24p mjpeg or 3d-rigging.

Right now I find it hard to even understand what is being worked on.

So, should there maybe be a voting to direct the efforts community-based? I´m definitely asking here!

no they can work on whatever they see fit to work on. they aren't on the payrole or anything...ha they all are shooters so they know whats important to shooters. great things will happen all in due time.....well hopefully =)

I think it would be asking too much. I don't feel I'm in a position to tell someone like Vitaliy and/or a team like that what to work on. I trust their sense of priority.

NO. everyone who is smart enough to work on this (not me unfortunately) is doing it off their own bat and it's nothing short of insulting for anyone to tell them where to concentrate their efforts.

I was happy when I first bought the GH1, delighted to turn it into the GH13 and if the progress stopped today I'd still be delighted.

Remember this is one guy with expertise donating his time to get this done. The only time when it's appropriate to make demands is when someone is on your payroll and you're paying them to do this.

If you look at Vitaliy's posts he's pretty upfront about how difficult it is to implement monitoring and 24P MJPEG. It's not like he's holding out on those features.

It's also pretty obvious that everyone would love these features, he's aware of that.

Plus, I'm pretty sure whatever we, as the community, want to get out of the hack, so does everyone working on developing the hack. It's not like they're going to spend all their time working so you can have all pink menu's instead of something like live HDMI output.

I want to provide one small tip.

You need voting if you want to bring some new information to me.
But you really do not need this as I read almost all usable stuff here.

Right now I got 10.2" LCD monitor (and I really think that this is best cheap monitor for filmmakers, except some overscan). So, HDMI is first target.
But some over stuff can be done even not using and changing GH1.
Like sound levels and focus assist can be done just changing firmware for monitor.
And this is much esear to get as we have only small and fast moving Chinese company here.
Looking at data sheet for Mstar chip used in this thing I almost sure that both this things can be done (plus gamma adjustments and exact calibration).

I suspect that many people use manual focus lenses for video, but there is no focus confirmation for any lens that is not Contrast Detection Focusing (CD) compliant. Is it at all possible to be able to update the firmware, to get focus confirmation with non CD (and manual focus) lenses? Even in still mode would be good!!!

I suppose you would need to understand the algorithm they use for CD focusing to understand WHY it doesn't work with other lenses. After all, CD focusing just uses the processor to examine the image and determine the highest contrast.
Perhaps there is a time constraint that the algorithm uses, or that it requires feedback from the lens. Perhaps if it can be enabled when there is "no lens" on the camera, with no feedback from the lens. e.g. When there is "no lens" on the camera & "MF" is selected.

You just do not understand contrast AF.
To be short, you can't make AF confirm light as you do in DSLRs.

As for focus assist, it is impossible to make without access to whole source and LSI documents (most probably it won't be possible even after this).
But on MStar chip used in LCD TV it may be possible.
As this cheap MStar has 9 tap programmable FIR. It can be not enought to do any serious stuff (modern full scale MStar TV chips as Saturn 6 or 7 can do amazing things).
But you can play to get edge indication (JVC method).

to Vitaly,

thanks for replying.

well, I´m an idiot. :)
I never meant to disrespect the huge work you´ve already done for every GH1 user (should we change it to l33t: "GH!"?), in no way!

But I have to admit: Seeing your statement that hdmi (my selfish "only one more thing I could dream of") is a priority makes me just happy! :) )

With best regards!

I searched around and I'm sorry if i missed this elsewhere in the forum, but is there a possibility that we'll be able to shoot 4:3 video somewhere in the future?

I could try to experiment with 640x480 mode.
As I understand it can be upped to about 1600x1200.

Wow, thanks man.

If it could do 1440x1080, most of us with cheap anamorphic lenses could shoot 2.66 Cinemascope aspect ratio (which we would have to crop to 2.39 due to vignetting :) sorry joke)

I know we can set resolution at this point, but somehow footage isn't as sharp as with standard resolution. Maybe due to no special anti-aliasing filters??

This would ONLY ADD TO YOUR LEGEND. I know that's not what you are about...but DANG. That would be SICK!! Anamorphic 2x.....WOWSER!
