Should I upgrade to Leopard?

Running Final Cut Studio 2 on a Mac Pro duo 2.66ghz with 2GB RAM, everything runs fine. Running OS 10.4.11, should I upgrade to Leopard? Or is this a case of if it's not broke don't fix it?

Also running Adobe CS3 Master suite...

I'd add another internal drive... and load leopard. I really like it.

Then load your apps and give it a try. If you don't like it... stay with tiger. Don't BREAK your system... add to it. If it works, great!

Good luck,

All my internal drives bays are loaded with SATA's. If I'm to test a new OS on a drive etc. sounds like its just easier to stick with 10.4.11

Thanks Capt.

I didn't mean anything regarding your post other than it just seems like a bit of a hassle to spend the money on the upgrade, then buy a new drive, then swap out one of my media drives and install the new OS on the new drive, then if it doesn't work out I've purchased a new drive and OS for nothing.

Do you run Leopard all the time but just keep 10.4.x on another drive? What I'm more curious about were any issues people had doing a straight upgrade to Leopard. But maybe I should just stick with 10.4.11 since it works.

Again no offense meant it just seems like a lot of hassle with the extra drive etc.

One adjunct that the Capt. inadvertently, no doubt, left off:

Always clone your boot drive with something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper BEFORE doing any updating. Use an inexpensive FW drive, or just swap one of the SATAs internally with a new one.

Then you have something to rely on if the new install doesn't work out.

Exactly, David... thanks for catching. Though it was clear in MY head re-reading it now sure sees that your addition is appropriate.

Take2 - no offense taken... (none really given either) I tend to get short when I'm not fully appreciated for my well thought out answers... um... wink?

Yes, I use Leopard full time. THAT said, some of the Studio2 users are still having HighDef (format) issues with leopard and QT 7.whatever. Though Studio1 and DV only seem to work great for me. ZERO issues.

I run Leopard, FCS2 on my Macbook Pro and have had no troubles. In fact, I think it runs BETTER.

At least for me all that you've detailed here is worth the effort. A new drive, particularly a boot drive, runs about $75.00 delivered.

One hour of editing down time runs more than that for our production studio.

What is irritating or inconvenient is often best practices for many of us that do what is suggested by Mike and others in installing a new OS.

Put bluntly "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

For a production environment and a completely new install, spend a couple of hours getting it fresh and clean.

Leopard has given me no problems. All the minor issues have been worked out. Very stable and compatible, great new features. Sticking with Tiger is not liking sticking with WinXP; Leopard has been great... I'd say upgrade. As ALWAYS, it is a good idea to do it at a non-critical time just so you have time to get setup and running and deal with any unexpected issues (though I doubt you'll have any)

Hey my buddy Dan just bought a 750 sata2 Seagate drive at fry's last night for $99. Its a in-store special, you have to ask for it because its in the cage.
