Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

I have used Premiere for a few years now, but it has given me constant problems. I now have Pro 1.5 and the problems continue.

Should I switch to Vegas 5?

Is there any reason I shouldn't

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

i would say that you shouldtry it out and see if it works for you.. theres a free trail download. then you can make an educated decision about whether you should switch or not... if you like it,, i dont see why not.. unless you want to stick to the adobe integration workflow. :)

I just got Vegas 5 and its afantastic program. Works flawlessly with the DVX100a, very easy to learn too. Thumbs up here.

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

I have to tell you from my personal experience that switching to vegas was the best thing that I have done for my editing experience. I was a long time premiere user, I loved the layout and workflow, I tolerated the unstableness of previous versions of premiere, and learned to save often, and I just felt that it was the best editing program out there for the money. I had lots of people tell me how wonderful vegas was and I was like, "yeah, but who uses vegas, it's like a kids toy compared to premiere". I was very unwilling to change. Then one day I downloaded vegas, this was about the time I was planning on buying a dvx. I figured that since premiere (at the time) was unable to support this camera, I would have to learn vegas. Much to my surprise vegas was one of the most intuitive and powerful NLE's that I had ever used. I ended up buying vegas and using it not just for my dvx, but for all of my editing needs. I now have vegas 5 and have never been happier. Plus, with full support for the dvx, with no 24p hassle, vegas is the only way to go. I agree with iamloser, download it, see if it works for you. I know some people who still don't like it, but it really is hard to find faults with it. Oh, and one more nice thing, Vegas 5 was released just before Ppro 1.5 and sony is already on the first update, 5.0b, you just don't get that kind of service from adobe unfortunatly. I am still a big photoshop/after effects user however. Oh, one MORE thing, if you get vegas, get the Vegas+DVD, not only do you get a great dvd authoring software solution, but you also get the Dolby surround sound AC3 encoder for free, something that costs about $300 if you buy it for Premiere, which adobe doesn't include for free.

I will be downloading the demo. But I think that I am already convinced.

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

Best thing I ever did for my workflow as well. Vegas is so superior from what I used to use (Premiere 6.0) that it's just not a question. No experience with Premiere Pro, but as compared to Premiere 6.0 Vegas is a tremendously better program. Especially with the DVX, because the 24p integration is flawless.

Especially get the +DVD version, for easy creation of 24P DVD's and an AC-3 encoder that supports full 5.1 surround-sound.

NEVER, though, simply take someone else's word for it.

To be honest, I did that with Premiere, and it was the sorriest thing I ever did -- I ended up hating it.

You could potentially have the same experience with Vegas, so definitely try before buy.

(I, personally, love it.)

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

Sage advice -- don't go buying $600 of software off of anyone's recommendation, especially when there's a free downloadable version available for trial.

But if you're used to Premiere, give Vegas a thorough try -- I find it so much easier to get tasks accomplished, in fewer clicks, and it's more fun... your mileage may vary, but I'm betting you're gonna like it!

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

Though it's quite different -- but don't be fooled into thinking it's not as good or better just because it takes an entirely different approach to something.

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

I use Vegas (4.0e) also, but I regularly load up Premiere for things that Vegas can't do: Easy timeline playback to tape without the "preparing" hassle and audio out through firewire so I can hear a temp mix directly on my external monitor speakers (the way a client would hear it).
Other than that, it's Vegas all the way.

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

Not sure I follow that -- why do you have to output through firewire to hear the audio mix through monitor speakers?

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

Vegas only outputs video through the FW connection while editing, audio is played through your selected sound card.

Re: Should I switch to Vegas from Premiere?

I like to hear a temp mix on my NTSC monitor speakers, not the speakers hooked up to my sound card (admittedly a holdover from my old film days). Premiere allows video AND audio to play out thru firewire so the audio stream goes thru my deck's audio outs to the Monitor.
This is something Vegas should really implement...how hard could it really be if Premiere has it?
Just my .02.
