Should I sell my DVX100A?

After reading about this new HVX, I'm wondering if its best that I just sell my DVX100A and put it toward the new camera. Also seeing that the andromeda device is gonna cost $3000, it almost seems pointless to keep the DVX100A with that mod. I don't know though, I'm just an enthusiast, not a real movie maker like y'all.

I wouldn't buy the HVX unless you had a movie in mind, or a high paying client if that's your thing. Right now, there isn't even a way to deliver HD without forking over some moola. You'd end up down-rezzing to DV anyway for a couple of years. Wait a few years for the HVX300 to come out and then you can pick up the HVX200 for the price of your DVX now, burn it to a BluRay disc and bring it over to your buddy's house to watch on his HDTV.

DON"T LISTEN TO THEIR LOGIC. FOLLOW YOUR GUT!

Yes. Your DVX100a is now a stinking piece of crap. A steaming pile of outdated technology. You should never even think of touching it again--certainly never show it to a client! In fact, I would be willing to offer you DVX removal services for next to nothing. Just give me your address and I'll pick up the useless piece of junk--you won't even have to ever look at it again.

I only make this offer because we met here. Consider it a favor from a friend. When can I stop by?

WHAT?

and not be able to shoot for several months? if you want to be a better shooter, filmmaker, whatever, you need SOMETHING and the ol' DVX is not exactly bird droppings. oh my.

honestly.....

what do you need HD for? You wont notice the difference on a normal TV....it's expensive to edit on...

unless you're doing this for a living or really into it, and expect to be outputting to theatre or transfering to film. I have no idea why you'd want to jump on the HD bandwagon just yet.

of course the DVX is still a great camera, i dont see why everoyne is so eager to shoot HD just yet

The DVX is priced low enough to be a hobbyist's cam, i.e., you don't and aren't trying to make money with it.

The HVX is in another class. It just doesn't make sense, in my estimation, to pay $9-10K for a useable cam if you're not going to generate income with it.

I mean, unless you've got that kind of money to throw around.

$115? I thought you had no cash. Hey, no cash, why'd you change your avatar? I liked the other one better. btw, did you get that clunk fixed? lol, just kidding...

Well... if you can front like $15K for all the accessories you're going to need with the cam, P2 cards, HD playback decks etc... HD monitors you'll need to view the footage, and the new HD software you'll need to author the HD DVD... then yah, get it.

...oh and if you can find clients who can actually watch HD or play HD footage back from the DVD players... then get it.

But you said it is for yourself more than trying to make huge movies... so it's up to how much you want to spend on yourself.

...and hell, I'll give you $120 to take it off your hands :)

Personally, I think us DVXusers will still be able to work with their current setups for at least the next 2.5-3 years.

I just know 1/2 the women I film would **** their pants & then fire me if they knew how much detail these HD cams put out. I was toying around with the Sony HDZX1, but I zoomed into the this cute blonde... and then I zoomed in all the way and I could see the ****ing zits beneath her chin covered with makeup. And you could see the flakes off the makeup.

Then right as I saw that, I hear behind me, "That chick needs cover up her zits more and get better makeup". I look back and these 3 guys were looking at the footage on a big HDmonitor.
I zoomed down to her arms and hands... and the guy's friend said "Damn she has wrinkly hands" this girl was in her younger 20s.

I think the next thing camera's will have to focus on is the ultimate built-in skin softener setting.

i dunno. i got offered 2 grand for it. i think maybe has about 50 hours. if i can stream the hvx stuff to a hard drive rather than use p2 cards, then ill definitely get it.

... or maybe i can just toss it on ebay at 1500 no reserve and watch the vultures fight over it.

... oh and i changed my avatar cuz the new site did not like the file size of the old one.

I say sell it. Honestly. When you buy the HVX, it's like you're getting a DVX that can record 16x9 native to MiniDV. Everyone here has been begging panasonic to release a native widescreen DVX. Well, there it is. The HVX IS a native widescreen DVX. PLUS you can do HD if you want/need/have to later on.

The camera is $5999. You got offered $2000 for your DVX. You can probably get up to $2500 if you do Ebay. Which makes the HVX $3500. You don't need P2 cards for MiniDV in widescreen 16x9. Heck, if you have a laptop you don't even need P2 cards for HD at all! You just shoot HD and stream directly into your NLE of choice that supports HD (Final Cut Pro, Avid Xpress Pro, Canopus) and you're set.

Think of the HVX as a DVX that can shoot widescreen to the same MiniDV tapes you're using now, AND it can do HiDef if you want to. For me, it's a no brainer. If you can afford it, and are considering the Andromeda for $3000, I'd get the HVX and have a camera that won't be obsolete anytime soon.
