Should I recommend the HVX200??

My main business is editing and while I sort out the pros and cons of what to upgrade to, I am also questioned on a daily basis by shooters & producers alike who ask me questions about the HVX200,as if I am an authority.......

Today a shooter/producer was asking me what camera he should look at. This guy shoots BetaSP now and while not the greatest shooter he does give me lots of editing work. I was hesitant to recommend the HVX200 to him because of the P2 workflow. This guy can barely send an e-mail and I just could not see him in the field downloading P2 data to a laptop. I have been on some of his shoots and thats what it felt like, a real shoot from the hip frenzy of activity.
I saw him strike and set-up the same location 3 times because the scripts were not broken out. While I would relish the idea of getting him into HD....Maybe HDV would be more up his alley??

Point him to this board. I would not put my reputation on the line telling someone that, for him, Coke will taste better then Pepsi.

XDCam will be worth checking out. Or HVX +Cineporter. I also think HDV is overly bashed. I've just seen too much good footage on it and instant backup is great. He just needs to do his own research and get a camera he's comfortable with. You'll figure out how to handle the footage from whatever he buys.

I have, and I have pointed him to creative cow. He cannot even navigate the web. I have shown him these sites at my place and sent him links...to no avail....See what I mean????

At this point I am just sending him to places to buy and will let him sort it out..

You could give it to him straight, advantages and disadvantages. Sounds like you already know what would suit his shooting style.

 LOL, I do see. I would tell this dinasau....errr, person (JK) the advantages and disadvantages, why you think certain advantages would be more helpful to someone like him, and then make it very clear, "This is just how I see it from my vantage point, I could be wrong, don't hang me later."

Be sure to OVEREMPHASIZE the disadvantages of all the different choices (IMHO). Most cameramen have very intimate relationships with their equipment and he is asking you to set him up, not just on a date, but a marriage. When he runs into an issue (as he will, no matter what he chooses), you don't want him banging on your door asking why you set him up with such a tramp.

Good luck
