Should I natively edit the .mts or log and transfer?

Like the titles says, I'm wondering which would be best in terms of quality. I only assume that the conversion to ProRes reduces image quality.

Hi,

Sens I got Adobe Prelude I have actually trans-coded footage to OP1 mxf and the hover scrubbing and over all performance is three times as quick.

FCP 7 (and most other edit systems) doesn't work well with compressed codecs like AVCHD so it is almost always necessary to convert the footage. FCP provides this built-in with it's Log and Transfer utility - although there are also third party applications that do the same (or sometimes better) job.

There is a small change in the video quality when it is transcoded but it is a necessary step and don't think of it as losing quality - it is changing the video from an acquisition format to an editing format.

Erik- do you have audio issues in CS6 that you didn't in CS5/5.5?

Well. I didn't use 5.5 much. I started learning it but had so many audio issues during playback with the AJA Kona card that I gave up. CS6 is better but I still have audio problems with the Kona card. Primarily drop out. I lose output and the only way to get the audio back is to click the source pane then go back to sequence and the audio comes back. I have to do this a lot and it's painful. I also get more crashes now with the Kona card that I didn't get when I ran it without. These are the fatal type that forces you to rename your project. When I didn't use the Kona card (prior to the software being ready from AJA) CS6 was so smooth with no issues. Kona card and mercury transmit isn't ready.

Why do use a Kona card Eric?

I have no third party cards and have full screen HD monitoring ....and no audio issues with AVCHD

Broadcast environment with HDSDI router and analog and DVCpro in and out. Need to have this for editing news promos or news topicals and whatever else comes my way.

Erik, sounds like issues specific to the Kona card- sorry you have to deal with that.
I haven't used Transmit...
Transmit works with third part IO devices sort of in the background. Its not something the user has any control of.

With FCP AJA was solid. I hope it will be soon with Premiere CS6. One update could fix it. But it’s hard to know if it’s a Adobe or AJA issue.

But if you want three times the performance transcode to OP1 mxf :)

By what test and measure ...did you get a three times performance improvement?

ie. 3x or 300%... is very impressive ...compared to what in what area ?

Sorry..meaningless without more info.

What has meaning is that it is night and day differences in the way PP decodes AVCHD to OP1 MXF
