Should I learn Avid or Final Cut Studio?

I'm new here so thanks for any input I receive. I'm planning to be shooting on an HVX200 and I was wondering if both Avid and Final Cut Pro Studio support this? Are both Avid and FCPS industry standard? And if I wanted to turn a hobby into a job sometime, say as an editor or an assistant ( I do have some connections in the Canadian industry, and possibly a few in L.A., and one feature I wrote and directed and co-produced under my belt [albeit that was a decade ago]) then what system is best to learn, Final Cut Pro Studio or Avid? Can Avid and Final Cut Pro Studio do the same things for around the same price, just on different operating systems? Thanks again.

Learn them both. FCP is growing much faster than Avid products but it is still pretty tough to get a job as an editor without having Avid experience.
While nobody hires Avid editors without Avid experience, many hire FCP editors who only have Avid experience.

I'm agree with Grinner. Learn both NLE, because the workflow is different between avid and final cut pro. If you can deal with those NLE editor, you will be more efficent and you'll be able to use any NLE editor available, because they work on the same basics.

also, by learning both you will improve your skills by incorporating methods learned in in the other NLE. although i find that it is usually the Avid skillset that is most beneficial to improving my FCP workflow.

If you want a job as an editor then you better know avid. FCP is fine for any small production/personal use, and it is a very fine system. Trust me though, in the recent Cinema Editor magazine (a publication put out by the American Cinema Editors, A.C.E.) there was a survey taken about what hardware the A.C.E. editors were using. Avid came in first with 89% and FCP at 9%.

What was the other 2% you ask?... Lightworks.

AVID vs Fianl Cut Pro

AVID vs Fianl Cut Pro

Indeed AVID is used on all major industry shows, films, ect.
Albeit they are using Symphony and other high end AVID systems, it is valuable to know the AVID post workflow as your skills elevate. FCP is solid, but bang for the buck and looking towards the future, learn AVID. AVID xpressPro HD has the best codec, which allows for solid picture quality through the post process.

I just bought AVID express Pro HD v5.2 and it works great and includes both a MAC and PC version, so you may use it with the hardware you current own.

Yeah, plus, once you know Avid on the lower end systems (Xpress Pro) it's the same interface for Media Composer or DS...
