SHould I hack my GF1?

Upcoming trip to China.. I'm taking the GF1 with me.. Would really appreciate the manual controls in video mode.

Not caring so much on the higher bitrate since I'd have to buy more memory card.

Is the GF1 hacked firmware reliable enough that I should consider putting it on? Last thing I'd want is getting GF1 bricked while traveling and needing the computer to reset the firmware..

Also does the hacked firmware negatively affect battery life?

thanks.

after using my brothers GF1 for a while i decided to pick one up for cheap, the day it arrived i hacked it and have had great success ever since.

i'm using the Fast Action Patch created by dvxuser Lpowell.

a little about my experience in the thread linked below...

after using my hacked GF1 for a while i got my hands on my brothers un-hacked GF1 again... it felt like the un-hacked GF1 was missing soo much! the manual video controls is a must if you want any control.

i haven't noticed any battery loss due to it being hacked.

once hacked the GF1 has to be set up for manual video... once its set up you have to save those settings to C1 on the dial, you would then use the C1 as the full manual movie mode.

one enjoying thing...
once you have saved your movie mode settings to C1, if you then want to change film mode (standard, dynamic, nature... etc)
you have to rotate the dial to M (manual stills mode) change the desired film mode (standard, dynamic, nature... etc) and then re-save to C1.

it can be a little bit of a fiddle at first, but once you've done it a few times its not such a problem.

you can save 4 different sets of settings using the C1, C2-A, C2-B & C2-C.

C1... standard film mode, manual movie settings.
C2-A... dynamic B&W, manual movie settings.

thats all i really need most of the time.

Yeah,

The only problem I have found using mine is that if there is not a lot of movement in a shot it will freeze it up with the 50mps fast action patch. It happens really rarely so it kinda catches me off guard. If I am filming like a stage performance goes black it will brick it up and loose the file. The 50mbs was documented to freeze with low bitrate and I knew this before I used it. But it works flawlessly for almost everything else I shoot (sports) and when I have control of the lighting.

You just to pull the battery and it is back working again but you lose the file. If you choose the 24mbs high reliability patch then you are good to go. I shoot mostly sports so I chose to risk it with the 50mbs patch and it works great for that.

I had mine an hour and hacked it. It is worth it.

i've had the GF1 lock up around 5 times total on deep focus shots (pull the battery to power off) yeah you lose the file yet the bonuses of running the hack far out weigh the flaws.

manual video mode! better quality video! i can't for a second imagine shooting a short using the automatic video mode. it would take away all the fun.

when you hack and save the settings to C1 etc. you still have the normal automatic video mode on the dial so you don't lose a setting, you gain a great one!

There are hacked settings that will playback in camera. You can do a lot of customizing with ptool. But the lpowell reliable in camera playback settings are a good place to start.

I have a hacked GF1 and I love it. I use the lpowell reliable in camera playback settings and I never had a problem.
