Should I consult with a lawyer about my script due to it's controversy?

I'm not going to go into detail about my script for privacy reasons, but I am concerned about the placement of my script in the culture of my country, this being the United States. I have done research on the freedom of speech and would like to know how I can discuss this dark tale I am writing properly and professionally with a lawyer that when it gets released to theaters, no one freaks out about it.

Most entertainment law firms in New York and LA will gladly take your money.

But if you can raise enough funds for a feature, relevant questions will likely be answered by then.

And presuming you have not been in the "positions of authority", you'll just have to stay away from slander.

You can't tell us the question but want an answer based on what we think? I seriously have no idea on if you are right or wrong. What makes me wonder is that you say "When it gets released...." but surely if there are serious issues with the content of your script, the theatres won't even want to take it. It's hardly a legal issue if the content is this contentious. If the script is the kind of material that is likely to cause legal, moral, social or entertainment anxiety, then no matter how good it is - people may walk away very quickly. It happens all the time. Scripts that don't have culture based issues have real trouble getting exposure. If yours is based around religion or worse religious politics, then no matter how good, it's very unlikely to get an airing. Chains will dump it and independent theatres want assurance it will make a profit. If the subject matter is so difficult you cannot even talk about it in vague terms - how would you even advertise it? Roll up, roll up come and see a really great movie - so good, we can't tell you about it, and so secret we can't get any press or publicity?

I'd suggest slander is the least of your issues - How many years has Salman Rushdie been hiding in excile for writing a book he thought would be a best seller? Even though oddly it was! The book was actually a terrible book - it was famous and sold because oif the controversy.
