should i buy two 16 gig p2s now or wait for the 32s?

i just ordered my HVX200
i am very excited...

but here is the big question

should i buy two 16 gig p2s now or wait for the 32s?

i like the idea of having 2 cards...

but i wonder if the 16s will come down in price when the 32s come out...

how long will the 16s be relevant?

this board led me to my decision against a p2 Store
and led me to the Panny monitor (vs the Marshall)

now i need some more help.

thanks

tony

If you need them now, buy them now. If you don't need them now, don't buy them. Something else is always coming along and the question isn't paralysis over what is coming down the road and when and how much, but rather do you need the item now to do your work.

We can't really advise until we see the actual MSRPs. The 16gb cards came out at a surprisingly low price, vs. what we were expecting. But the 32s have been announced at $1650, and we don't have any reason to expect them to be lower when they come out.

I would always advice two 16s over one 32. But if you can afford it, two 32s would be better than two 16s, of course. And we expect the 64 to come out in 2008.

How long will a 16GB remain relevant? As long as you own the camera. I mean, at what point would a re-usable recording media that lets you store 40 minutes of footage, become irrelevant? Never! (said by the guy who still owns and uses two 4GB cards....) :)

The logic of markets. This is not Exxon and BP. These are different products. Common sense tells us price competition will result as each side seeks to dominate the solid state-based market. But of course I am no Soothsayer. We shall see soon enough.

Well, all I'm saying is, they had a chance, and everyone expected Sony to do exactly that. But instead they ended up pricing their product at exactly the same price as Panasonic's, to the penny. So it looks like the whole point was to avoid any manner of price war...

I took a year of economics, and also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

As I recall, if the one company prices its product identically to another company, why should the competitor want to lower its price. Especially if the two products are not interchangeable.

Sony's solid state device won't work with Panasonic's and the reverse is true.

So why would Panasonic lower its p2 cards?

Yeah if you need it buy it. I bought a 16g last week and Im happy to have to spend less time wating offloading an more time for shooting.

No. Sony will lower theirs first. Then Panasonic will follow suit.
Well, let's hope you're right. However, Sony has never ever ever ever ever been the low-cost leader... they always price their gear higher than anyone else (the so-called "Sony Premium" that you have to pay). So I doubt what you're saying will come to pass, but price wars make all us buyers happy.

Sony is in trouble right now. They've lost the TV wars to Samsung, lost the game wars to Microsoft, and their earnings are in the toilet. They've produced lousy camcorders for years now, deeply hurting their reputation with pros. They blew 24p and their audio has sucked. I think they need a big success with the EX is the worst way.

They do. They're absolutely desperate. They've bet the company on blu-ray, and the world collectively is saying "so what?" Nobody would buy their 1/2" XDCAM system so they had to promise to buyers that if they'd just take the 1/2" now, they'll come back and take the 1/2" stuff away and give 'em brand-new 2/3" systems when those are ready -- sound desperate to you? Does to me.

But that doesn't mean they'll engage in a price war. That would be absolutely antithetical to everything that company has ever stood for. I mean, if they wanted a price war, why not start at the camera itself? Why price it 45% higher than the HVX200? 'Cause that's what Sony does, it's what they've always done, and it's what they'll always do.

Good points, Barry. As has been said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. It is quite logical to expect Sony to make the same mistakes they always have.
