Should a external audio recorder be used on the GH2 or a XLR break out box?

After watching Philip Blooms video "recording sound for DSLR" I was wondering if the GH2 also will require either an external recording device or a XLR break out box.

To be short, yes. From cheap ones to expensive Sound Devices things.
First morst important thing is microphone placement->next microphone->next preamp->next recorder.
If you look at initial frame, mostly all is wrong :-)

I guess my question really revolves around what records audio better, the GH2 with a XLR box for preamp and NR or a tascam dr100?

I am always haunted with background noise in my recordings on my HVX and I like the way the JuicedLink DT454 4 Channel DSLR Preamp / Meter / Phantom / AGC Disabler takes that problem head on.

I was not sure however if the tascam could also take care of the background noise as well with out having to use something like the juicedlink DT545

If you are shooting as a one man band, then I'd say a Juiced Link/Beachtek box will serve you well, as it's designed to be used as such. It will also help you in post with no syncing to be done. So run and gun, and documentaries, I'd say yes.

With a sound man, or where you have time to mic-up, then an external recording device will probably suit better, as you'll be able to rig a mic very close to the sound source without being tethered by the camera. With external recorders, the sky is the limit with how much you want to spend and the quality of those preamps and processing.

You can also do well as a one man band with a Zoom H4n or equivalent, boom mic, boom pole, boom pole stand with wheels, and a good omni lav. Lots of gear, sure, but sooo worth it.
