Shotgun Too Small For HPX Mic Mount

I searched the forums but couldn't find anything about this. Just got my HPX and a Rode NTG-3. The diameter of the mic is so small that it doesn't fit snugly in the HPX mic mount. Is there any solution for that? I didn't see anything in the Rode kit that would allow me to mount to the hot shoe. Did I miss it? Any suggestions?

What I do is wrap gaffers tape around the mic body, (obviously avoid covering up any slits on the mic). Don't use duct tape or anything else though, or you'll have lots of tape residue after a while that will never come off. It also doubles as an emergency "roll" of gaff tape :)

I've also used wide rubber bands wrapped around many times.

As Tim said, rubber bands are a great way to go. In addition to creating a snug fit for the mic in the holder they will also help dampen any movement or shaking that may occur while filming.

I took the plastic end cap off a mic stand, cut out the bottom, and fit it around my mic, and put a knot in my mic cable so that I can slip this piece on and off and not loose it. When I use a larger mic holder I slip it on, and otherwise slide this down...work great.

Hmmm, my sony mic came with a rubber thing to fit snug around the mic and tight in the holder. (or maybe it came with the camera??)

Nick, I respect your ingenuity, but a knot in the mic cable? Have you ever heard of 'microphonics'? It generally occurs in cables that are over stressed.

When I say knot I think you're thinking some insanely tight thing....I in know way have tightned it down...it' just a loose looping to ensure I don't lose the rubber bit.

In fact I have no true stress points in my cable as I always tape down everything to ensure that I get no rubbing on cameras, boom mics, or extra stress on any part...not to mention that taping wires down helps to distribute weight evenly and help battle unevenly balanced booms, camera's and such.

Rest assured that one of the first things on my mind is protecting my investment.

I've used cork wrapping for bike handlebars with great success in the past, but I hate the mic mount on the HVX with a passion.

Maybe its great for a really short shotgun mic like an AT875, but anything else, its best not to bother putting the thing on.

DM_riders's suggestion of a shoe mount is spot on.

For my 897 here was my answer for mic mount bliss.

And as an added bonus it provides perfect clearance over my Vocas mattebox with the flag up and the rycote furrie on. Extra bonus...

I prefer the camera mic mount but unfortunately, mine snapped off and I don't think it's worth getting a new one for $60. I like the cam mic mount because then I am free to use the hot shoe for my light or something else. I have a shock mount for the hot shoe and it works pretty nicely and before I had that, I used gaffers tape for my mic.
