shotgun mic (NTG2) and wide angle?

I am trying to decide what shotgun to buy. Can NTG2 be mounted in the HMC mic mount without showing on wide angle shots? What would be the max length of the mic before forcing me to mount it in the hot shoe?

Is that a good idea to use mic mount of HMC150? Can a shockmount be mounted there as well?

Thanks

I use the NTG2 and widest angle a lot - and it's not a problem. You just have to make sure you don't mount it too far forward. I'm very happy with the results from it.

I use the NTG2 as well, but I think the NTG 1 would be better as it is shorter and the same apart from not having the battery power option.

I have the NTG-1 and as long as it is mounted back as far as possible it is not visible in the viewfinder, with the standard foam wind screen.

But with the RODE WS6 wind shield fitted, fur can be seen at wide angle. I had the WS6 swapped for a KOALA brand 130mm wind screen, which is much shorter than the WS6, but a small bit of fur was still visible. :Drogar-Mad(DBG): To overcome this I made a small bracket out of aluminium bar - about 25mm x 50mm, maybe 2mm thick. The bracket is attached to the camera, and the standard HMC150 mic mount is bolted to the top of the bracket. This raises the mic about 40mm, and no furry bits are visible at wide angle!

i think rode do one that will fit inside the mic mount though i think it would be better to get a standard fitting shockmount & connect it to the hotshoe with cheap adapter - means you can also mount same shockmount on boompole which is always more preferable anyway. the cameras mic mount will give you more handling noise than a shockmount

I would try it with the camera's mount first, personally I haven't had problems with this, although a proper shock mount would be better, the camera mount has quite a soft rubber grip which insulates the mic quite well compared to other cameras I have used.

The Rode SM5 is that you're thinking of. It's a shockmount that fits inside the mic mount and raises your mic up in the process (no more dead kitties in the shot), but the kicker is that it has both 1/4" and 3/8" threading on the bottom so it will still work on a boom pole or other accessories.

I also bought the SM5 thinking that the NTG2 was not going to fit in the HMC holder, but the NTG2 fits fine on the HMC holder - no problems at all - so the SM5 never gets used ( at least not on the camera) .

yeah, but it might just keep the furry hairs out of the shot

If you are referring to the dead cat - I personally wouldn't bother. Just put the foam on the mic (the foam that comes with it) and forget that pathetic add-on cat.

I tried that one too - and it made no real difference over just the foam without the cat.

If you need the 'cat because the foam is not enough then you probably need the blimp instead.

Nah, I have the WS6 (comparable to a rycote softie) for booming outdoors in light wind. The foam works just fine for indoors, though.

I use the NTG-2 on the HMC with an Opteka fisheye, the 0.4. I don't see it on my shots. You just have to mount it a bit more on the back than usual but i'ts not a problem at all.
