Shotgun Mic. Help

A quick search should turn up a ton of threads with pretty much the same question (not to mention probably 50% of the threads on the first page), and don't forget to check out the stickies, a bunch of very good info in there. I realize this answer can come off a little 'RTFM' but these questions are asked every day, and the stock answers really don't change that often.

If you can give a little more info about your intended uses, you're more likely to get more useful responses.

As for the paint-boom, I posted a brief guide in a thread a couple weeks ago that might get you started on that front.

I want to invest in the
Rode. Shotgun Mic. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/367746-REG/Rode_NTG_1_NTG_1_Shotgun_Microphone.html

Does anybody have other mic. suggestions around the same price range?

More importantly, can anyone link me to the right XLR wire to hook the shotgun microphone via xlr cable to my dvx 100a.

Thanks in advance.

Also if anyone could link me to a tutorial, or just explain briefly how to make the Boom stic with a painters pole.

Nothing special about the cable, just a standard mic cable with a male XLR on one end and a female XLR on the other will work just fine. BTW, there's no need for exotic (and expensive) "audiophile" cables.

The NTG-2 is the better option because when you come to sell it way in the future, you'll have more chance with consumers because of its battery option.

But you see there it's longer than the NTG-1, so depends on where you mount it but try using a ruler to check it won't hang over the front of your DVX on a wide shot. You'll need a shockmount too.

and outdoors the WS6 will really nail the wind even on a painters pole.

I'd opt for a 25' quality mic cable from the pole to the camera and Sony 7506 headphones to hear it all.

Cheers.

Thanks everyone for the Help. Got the microphone, the shockmount and the xlr wire in today..

Just for clarification..

On the DVX
I am hooking the Shotgun microphone via xlr to Input 2.

I should switch the Input 2 switch to MIC and keep the input 1 switch on line?
Then as i open the LCD Panel... i should switch off input 1, and switch ON input 2 ?

As for the Channel 1 and Channel 2

I have both channels on input 2.

Does al this seem correct? Thanks in advance.

Also, to monitor the audio being recorded by the Rode Mic. What is a cheap pair of headphones that i can plug into the Phones Jack? Wil regular ipod headphones do the trick? Or is a special Pair needed.

If you're just using the one mic, theres no reason to not plug into channel 1. Depending on the camera, you might be able to set the input of channel 2 to channel 1, which would let you set one channel lower to guard against peaks.

As for the phones, ipod earbuds aren't going to cut it. You want some proper closed headphones with a good flat response. Sony's MDR7506 are pretty much the standard. Sennheiser's HD280 are also commonly used.

On the DVX, it's input 2 that can rout to both record channels, and as per his post, he's got the setup right.

And I'll second the safety channel... set your record level on Ch. 2 a few dB lower than for Ch. 1.

And the Sony MDR-7506 headphones are the way to go, though they're not inexpensive.
