FS7: Shotgun mic fitment advice

I've just ordered my FS7 and want to get the accessories I need as quickly as possible.

I've read a lot of things about the shotgun mic holder being larger than most shotgun mics  I have an NTG2 and wanted to know if there's any solutions to make it hold this mic securely?

Thanks

I replaced the bar with a smallrig rod with a hot shoe on one side that I stuck a suspension mount and my ntg2 on.

Ideally I don't want to be messing around with ugly bits of tape / rubber that might slow me down on a shoot if they're falling out etc. Shot with a c300 for ages and a bit of foam to hold the mic that annoyed me all the time. Not to say it's not a perfectly fine solution, I'm just really picky.

Interesting idea to get a suspension mount on there, was it just a 1/4" thread? Did you never have issues with the mount undoing from the thread from the weight of the mic?

There's nothing ugly about my tape, certainly it's never slowed me down, lol.

That said, I ditched my NTG2 after a few months in favour of an Audio Technica AT875R as it's much shorter and doesn't get into shot when it has a windshield attached. SOmething to consider...

Another vote for the AT875R for good sound quality. Use it on my C100 and other cams. Two 'O' rings hold it in most "oversized" cam mic holders very nicely.

You can always be a ponce, like me, and get the Sony accessory rubber sleeve thingy - works a treat with the AT875R (actually, I got the dealer to chuck in the rubber thingy with the sale of the 875R, but I'm still a ponce.)

I actually used a couple of rubber O rings on a NTG2 with my EX3. They stay on and should provide enough spacing to secure the mic in the holder.

I never meant to offend about the tape and rubber, it's more my slight OCD with things like that that bug me. Could you post a picture to see what you mean?

Yes have considered the AT875R for that reason, then I have my NTG-2 for booming. Shooting with the NTG on a C300 it always annoyed me how long the microphone was, was hoping it would be quite adjustable on the FS7?

I don't think any one was offended. Quite the opposite, I found it funny that you'd dismiss a simple battle tested solution in favour of one that costs £££.

If you search DVX there's a thread on this subject with pictures of the o rings - they are small rubber bands that slip snuggly over the mic. Here are some pics of AT875R pimped out with gaffer tape. I travel a lot, so this mic has been abused a lot - attached, taken off, squashed in bags, re-attached etc. It's still going strong with it's mkI tape...

Alternatively use one mic of your choice and wear headphones to ensure there is always one good track.

You are right. That would be a good habit (next after hiring a sound-person). However both mics are good. But for grab and shoot the two microphone option works most of the time. (Mostly nature, no dialogues.) I use apart recorder (zoom H5) for ambient sound (With headphones).

Advantage of videomic pro is the windcut and decibel-selector -10, 0, +10 I check the soundlevels roughly: windy -10, no wind 0, +10 never.

But main reason: two tracks to choose from are better than one.

You got a link to that there rubber thingy? Might be lookin to get me one'a them. Much obliged.

Also, learned a new word today. Ponce. Must be more of a European term??

The tape obviously would work, I misunderstood what you meant thinking you meant taping up the holder on the camera. It's just that I often use my shotgun mic in a boom, on run and gun when I change up to a boomed interview so it might interfere with the way it's held in the blimp.

That £10 attachment looks fine.
