Shot the MV today.

Damn I'm tired.

We shot the video (Commerical really; don't make me explain it again!) today and it was fun as ****. The band were some very cool kids from San Diego and you know what? They rock.

"Welcome to my World"

Dan Lahav (One of our members here) showed up and brought along his DVX so we had two for plenty of coverage. People on the street (5 stories down) were starting to gather at times as we had sequences where the band just plugged right in to their stacks. We were in the heart of downtown and felt real cool on a 5 story building with cameras and amps blaring.

We shot 1/250 shutter speed for that 'look' on 24pa. Default Scene File 6.

We (dan and I) really wanted to play with the settings more but the Director wanted to shoot 'True" and do any other adjustments in Post.

It was mainly overcast all day; which is cool actually. There was a threat of rain, but waited till after we wrapped to rain! :)

The light fluxuated alot even though it was usually overcast so there was a constant IRIS adjustment. The marine layer was under the overcast so it was constantly changing temps.

Dan is a totally cool dude and most likely will be helping develop a short film we have started pre-pre-production on. Nice to have a San Diego DVXer; like you Canadians! ;)

We used our ZEBRAS which I ****ing hated. I like being able to actually see if you know what I mean. It's cool; next time I'm shooting without them.

Fun stuff and it being my first time shooting an MV it was way easier than I thought. It's all about coverage. We got some real nice shots.

Okay, Im tired, Im rambling. Just wanted to share.

Re: Shot the MV today.

lucky you.. I just got off a 12 hour shoot with the XL1... had to use it because we used arri 35mm lenses with the PS technic.. It looked pretty cool with the shallow field but man is that camera a pain in the ass to use. I felt like I was back in the 90's again.

Re: Shot the MV today.

LOL :)

There was a dude there that was all "MAC/XL1". He was cool, but it's funny how people are so divided on these things.

I guess not everyone can be cool like us. ::)

Re: Shot the MV today.

Hey John,
The shoot did indeed rock. I learned a lot and definately hope to persue future projects with ya man. FYI John is a really great person to work with. Totally outgoing and friendly. I'll write more tomorrow;i just finished watching Beautiful Mind and im gonna crash!!

Re: Shot the MV today.

cant wait to see what you did John.. are you gonna post the edit?

Re: Shot the MV today.

You and Dan were awesome today. We reviewed the footage tonight and it looked excellent. Really, everything from your technical execution to your creativity and motivation were on the highest level. Next time I promise we'll have more for breakfast than krispy kremes. :P

I'm sorry about having to shoot clean but Shawn is amazing with color correction and visual effects. So I figured since he's offering his services we should take advantage of it.

I didn't know you weren't down with the zebras...lol. Should of just told me. :)

I had a blast too. It was a pleasure working with DVX's, the PA's kept commenting on how much it looked like film in the monitor.

I can't believe how we lucked out with the lighting and the rain, not to mention getting that bass cab up that 100 year old ladder. :P

Thank you guys again so much for working on this project with me!

(I'm sure John will be posting some footage of this soon.)

Re: Shot the MV today.

Thanks 'Case' (Casey really, but I say CASE!)

I had no problem shooting true. I imagine Shawn is going to really make it look even more bitchen. He seemed very knowledgable on all things film (I actually learned from him too!). I am a firm believer in POST and using all of the tools at our disposal.

The ZEBRAS were freakin me out. I felt hindered in what I could see, even though they just reveal hot spots I was like, agggggggghhhhhhh. :)

Yes, we had to get amps up this crazy wooden ladder about 15' up through the roof access including the base amp (150lbs?). That was almost dangerous.

I can't even wait to see what kind of magic is applied to the footage. It was good times and I cannot wait for the next project!

Case, Dan and Shawn were all very fun to work with. No egos at all, just great communcaition, great energy and great people.

Re: Shot the MV today.

Hey Casey-
No problem, I had a great time. I cant wait to see the footage! I'm really excited to see how the whole things looks!

Next time talk 'em into using the PS Technik on the DVX100. It works magnificently, and the footage will look better than the XL1 version!

There was a dude there that was all "MAC/XL1".

It never ceases to amaze me how often those two go together. There's even an Apple dealer here in town who's an authorized Canon reseller.

Re: Shot the MV today.

John i'm anxious to see the footage when you get it online... I'm glad to hear it went well for ya man.

Re: Shot the MV today.

Congrats on your shoot but you mentioned that it was easier than you thought. How many locations did you shoot in? If it was only then I see why you say it was easy. I shot a video in VA Beach a few summers ago and we shot about 10 locations with wardrobe changes, makeup had to be redone, etc. It took us the entire weekend to shoot. Its a little more involved when you have to follow a story line that the group is singing about. A performance video is pretty easy, all you have to do is get the shots which it sounded like you did.

You mentioned you didn't like using the zebras. Yea I don't care to use them on my ENG camera at work. I only use them when I am setting up lights. Did you all have your camera's hooked up to monitors? If you don't like Zebras then you can look at your monitor to see how "Hot" your video is and then iris down but you should use your zebras for that in all honesty.

Re: Shot the MV today.

It was one location but I was referring to the actual process. Maybe cause it's the first time I was a DP type character and not a PA or Grip? :D Remember, I had never shot an MV before!

We had a monitor but it was just sooooooooooo overcast and glaring and bright (On a roof top) even with a hood.

I recognize the importance of the Zebras but still hate it (Doesnt mean I have to like it)

Re: Shot the MV today.

Yeah Yeah im the XL1/MAC guy, though I never said I lived by the XL-1 but I bought mine and tweaked it out long before the DVX100 was even a concept camera.

As for the zebras I know you dont like them, and in an outdoor environment they can be really rough if you dont have enough lighting to balance exposures out, but I didnt realise you wernt turning them back off when shooting. Hehe I figured you were just using them between takes to check exposure in the camera.

Me and KC pretty much finalized the cut tonight, and it looks awesome. Some really great stuff, you would think we actually knew what we were doing. I think john will have some footage up today most likely.

Oh and as for shooting clean, had we not I would never have managed to get the look we ended up with since in post you can take it one step beyond what you could ever do in the camera. Remember that even with film they almost always shoot clean and then touch it up either during the processing, telecine, or digitaly in post. Its much smarter to keep a clean copy you can do anything with, than a set look that will be hard to change or get out of if you end up not liking it.

Anyways talk to you guys later and it was a blast workin with ya.

Re: Shot the MV today.

congrats john!! cant wait to see it. i know what you mean about the zebs though..
..ive taken to using the zebras at 100 almost all the time. that way  i only see them if somthing is blowing out. every now and then ill set it to 80 for a sec to check and see if the skin tones are near there, but usually i just go by eye as far as exposure on subject, and make sure i have the look i want rather than the "textbook" exposure, and keep the zebra at 100. the other day i ran into a situation where the zebs were all over the place when set at 80, and i quickly shut them off. thats just rediculous..

Re: Shot the MV today.

LOL

Shawn.

Shooting clean is actually one of the lessons I learned that day. I have spent alot of time 'tweaking' the look in camera, when now that I realize it, it's better to have a 'clean slate' in POST than have some weird looking **** to work with!

YEah, your XL1 is CYBORGED out (Matte boxes and all kinds of **** on it). Man, you have got to get a DVX though. I just hate the ZEBRA :'(

Re: Shot the MV today.

Hey, no fair talking about the shoot 'n getting everyone excited without posting some video goodness! >:(
