Hey Everyone,
This is my first post here. I love some of the work that has been posted in this section. I thought it would be a good idea to post some of my HVX shot videos and see what you guys think. I'd love to hear some thoughts.

This is a recent music video, shot at the end of October of 2007. Released on December 15th.

I liked the starting and ending with the blocks fading in and moving around. When you got to the band playing by themselves though it seemed like a lot of energy was lost.. I dunno, it might have just been me but it kinda felt weird watching them perform in that space. Maybe the wide shot should have been tighter, and the cuts should have been cut quicker. I guess that is the kind of music video I have been used to seeing... and you may have wanted to go for a more toned down clip.

Overall it was a nice video. What were the settings you used? Any extra info is appreciated!

Zeakio, thanks for the feedback.
I'm quite happy with the edit... although I can see how some may find it a bit monotonous at times. I wanted to clash the more stylized verses... with the organic.. true "indie rock" feel for the choruses. The bridge and final chorus are meant to be more exciting.
Overall though the band was thrilled with the video (which made me very happy of course) and their fans seem to like it.

Here are the specs we shot with:
720p/24pn
Standard HVX lens
I can't recall the exact settings on the camera unfortunately... but I'm sure we pressed some of the blacks, and went for the Cinegamma.
I don't even know if my DP remembers the exact settings. I'll ask him the next chance I get.

The entire video was edited, colour corrected and animated (boxes) in FCP... which, although is often ill-advised, seemed to work quite well this time.

The straight edit was very organic for me... and didn't take me a long time to do. The look, however, took me a few days to revise and tweak.
Although I love the in-camera settings on the HVX... I find that I have more control, and more fun, getting my look done in post. As long as the footage is clean and the colors are neutral (in terms of saturation) then I'm happy... because then I can tweak the hell out of it in post.

Yeah it normally is better to just do the colour correcting and such in post.. since you have so much control with FCP.

I figured you were trying to clash the versus and chorus. I have no doubt the band loved the video and I'm sure the fans have no complaints with it either! Just trying to lend my view of the video. But overall it's a very solid video, great work!

Can't wait to see some more of you work in the future. And thanks for posting the settings you could recall!

Ha... thank you Zeakio. Sorry if I came off a bit defensive.. I do appreciate the feedback.
At the end of the day your opinion matters just as much, if not more, than the band's. The band loves it because it's their video... so I am thankful for the honest critique.

I'm glad you like it overall though. I've got a bunch more that I'll post in the coming days. Figured posting them one at a time would be better than all at once.

Rock solid video. You kept things interesting the entire way through with some nice editing and a couple different lighting schemes. So kudos on a really good "indie" video. Are they British? I got a Brit-vibe from the entire piece.

Loooooooove the song too. Aced it.

Thanks so much. They are actually from Toronto, Canada.. but yeah they definitely have that Brit vibe... no doubt.
