Another Japanese production...

I haven't even watched it yet...

[edit: Just watched. Looks like they decided to take advantage of a 4K frame to do multiple locked down passes, and fake camera moves in post. Wanting for better material again, I suppose. LED lights at end look good]

[2nd edit: ehh, forget I even posted it. That's what I get for posting before I watch]

Yes 4k opens a lot of post-production possibilities not previously possible when shooting with the same rez as the delivery of format.

This video is testament to some of those possiblities ie. post zooms and even faked motion control shots.

Well, I can't complain no lighting or DP was used that's for sure. Great work.

i dunno, all these online vids seem like strapping a turbo to your horse. trying to sell 4k in a 2k world.

Watch the video @ 1:03 and see a perfect example of how 4k is used in post even for 1080p final delivery project.

Really can point to this piece whenever someone says "Why do I need 4K if I am delivering in 1080?" Really proves the point. Great piece.

Indeed.

4k even for 2k film print or 1080p delivery also has the following post benefits: reframing, motion stabilization, crisp post zooms, image pans, snap zooms, and steadying and cropping steadicam footage for ultra smooth flight.... and these techniques are used in major motion picture films WAY more than people tend to think. The reason we don't know about them, is because we don't notice them. :)

Motion stabilization is actually very practical now, however, because of the global shutter. Without it, even if the footage was stabilized, you would still see distortion artifacts from the camera shake; now the effectiveness is limited only to shutter speed.

The entirety of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was shot on an Epic at 4.5k, but every shot was then reframed to 3600x1500, for stabilization, scaling and repositioning; even so, the film still released in theaters as "4k".

I pissed off a few steadicam ops because I was suggesting that a lot of their footage is further stabilized in post and also cropped. Everyone has seen those steadicam shots "squeezing" through doorways or whizzing by people just BARELY missing them, yada yada yada...

Yes, shoot on steadicam with 35mm lens then crop to 50 or even 70mm in post and no one is the wiser.

I agree with you on "fixing" shots and having that work. I dislike the Photgenik use of this technique, however. Feels like the old "pan-and-scan" technique done to draw the viewer to the action for films shown on 4:3 television. Not tastefully done, IMO.

Awful video.

Regarding IQ I see lots of aliasing. Especially in the first minute of the video.

WOW this looks like one of the Akiba bands that usually performs around the bus station on Sundays for the Otaku. Old guys lining up and dancing, the girls wear short dresses with ever the hint of showing their butts. Not kidding here. Had to shoot them once (not this specific group - but very similar). They have these basic dance routines which the Otaku that follow them learn. Becomes competitive around that bus station Sunday let me tell you. Wish I knew where that footage was.

Think Sony should have a little higher with this piece.

This stuff needs to stop being posted, what low quality work being put out by high quality camera... Just delete this thread please, no need to see this.

If you remember that the owner of this site is a partner with Red you'll realize that the likelihood of them deleting a thread with a crappy unauthorized Sony clip is near zero. They're laughing in their shirt sleeves and hoping more appear.
