On a side note, IMO this is one of the best examples of a feature film shot on the F3 that has amazing color and overall tonality and rendition.

Interesting panel discussion including the colorist Peter Saraf on the film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxCJ7Zai5ic&app=desktop

I really enjoyed this film. They shot on some sort of cine setting, not even log.

I think the F3 has a pretty special image. It definitely renders green in a really nice way.

Yes log was not out yet. Here's the article you might have read:

I wonder what happened to that Aussie war film... shot on the F3 too... it was set in WW1

"Battle Ground", later renamed to "Forbidden Ground"

I forgot about that film. Actually it also made the F3 shine. how can I forget that one.

They got a distribution deal, and I've seen it on netFlix, etc.. so probably also selling on DVD as well but hard to say which territories.

I just worked with the 1st AD of 'Forbidden Ground' on this last feature I did, I could ask her if she knows where to buy/stream it if anyone would like?

LOLWOT!

"...amazing color and overall tonality and rendition"

Ironic that even in that image you posted in the OP the tippex white blowouts are apparent. Watch the trailer and there's some really harsh blowouts. I do not see anything special here at all other than a good story brought to screen. There's hundreds if not thousands of Vimeo films in the FS7 group than knock this into a cocked hat for shear quality of image.

If indeed this film influenced indie movies for 5 years it had nothing to do with the image of the F3 and was all about going after the new market of streaming.

Whatever original image I had stopped working, so I replaced it with a temporary replacement. I've updated the first post again.

Anyway these are just google grabs, best to go watch the film. It was probably re-colored after if got a distribution deal plus some of the images on google could be from set photographer etc..

cheers

Of course it doesn't look like a high end image. But it looks better than most low budget movies shot on digital.

But the sound is terrible. Interesting that no matter how good cinematography is, bad sound will always make things "look" terrible.

Didn't see the film, but based on the trailer, sound is not that bad. Shots in the first part were in large room with echo. A couple of segments were "TV interview" footage and were supposed to sound bad. The rest sounded fine to me.

Genuinely interested in an (even slightly) more detailed explanation of how you found the sound to be terrible. I don't remember finding it particularly bad when I watched it 5 years ago, and on careful listening can't find much to complain about it in the trailer.

Care to share?

It was a different time. Ironically the FS7 cannot produce color that looks as good as the F3. How old is the F3 now? Come on now Sony. This wasn't even shot in a LOG mode.

This film is great. Audio and images are both nice.

He probably watched a 240p version on youtube.

Sorry but this is absurd to claim the FS7 can't create colour as good as the F3 when the FS7 has Sony's improved colour science. Do you understand the function of LUTs or colour grading in general?

A different time? It was hardly the previous century, a couple of years before the F5 was released.

I actually felt the F3 had better tonality and feeling compared to the FS7. Still think the FS7 is the better camera for me, but in terms of aestethics I liked the F3 better.

Much of the F3 look is due to a 1080p imager and recording in ProRes, the combination gives a dreamy soft image with little compression posterisation i.e better tonality.

If you want to recreate the look of the F3 in the FS7 you can by shooting 4k using some fairly heavy lens diffusion and at the end of the project output in HD. This was my recipe for getting the very best 1080p image out of the FS7. I found this looked much more organic than shooting internally at 1080p which suffered from too much sharpening for my taste.
