Shot in the foot! Any suggestions.... (DVC rack / canopus)

OK, so I've been beta testing the new Serious Magic product. Its great!

I was covering a skate event and on day one I was just shooting 720p50 to P2 and offloading to a firewire drive when I could. Not very practical for event coverage.

On day two I took out a laptop with DVC rack on it. I'd tried it out the night before and in AvidQT mode I could only do 1080 (the QT codec wouldn't playback the 720 stuff), so I took a risk and used the 720 mode in Canopus avi format. DVC Rack performed pretty well! Recorded and played back smoothly. (Other Mark - I'll keep up the testing and give you a full report) This is going to be a killer app when its finalised!

I'd vaugely remebered that the Edius v3 demo could open the canopus DVCPRO HD avi files, but when I got home I could only find the v4 demo which wouldn't open the clips. Yikes.
I was planning on transcoding the clips to the Cineform format (another awesome product) for my post work but I'm kinda stuck now.

Its not critical work (I was doing it for free) but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be greatful.

DVFilm Maker should be able to transcode the files? Or, download the latest EDIUS v4 demo. The first one apparently didn't have all the EDIUS Broadcast features, but maybe they've since updated it?

I tried the edius v4 demo and it wouldn't show video for any DVCproHD format (sound was there). There didn't seem to be anything in the project setups except for HDV either. I'll double check again tonight.

Milezee,

Please send me a sample clip (yousendit.com) and I'll see if there is a quick change that will make Aspect HD or Connect HD work for you. Converting an DVCPRO-HD AVI to a CineForm AVI should be very easy.

Miles,

I just set your DVC Rack sample file back in an email (now fixed). DVC Rack beta is forming the AVI header that is not compatible with the P2 Viewer DVCPRO-HD decoder. I will send them a bug report if someone can inform me where that should go. It seems to be Panasonic bug, yet it can be fixed at DVC Rack end. Of course we can put the fix into the CineForm conversion tools, now that I know what the issue is.

Amazing!

I've emailed Mark Mapes at Serious Magic (he's on this board somewhere) and asked him to take a look at this thread.

In the mean time do you think I can hack the headers myself with a hex editor or is there more too it than that?

That is what I did (used a hex editor.) Go to hex offset 0xC0, for 720p this field will have 00 A4 1F 00, replace this with 00 65 04 00 (for 50Hz sources) and 80 A9 03 00 (for 60Hz sources.) The 1080 numbers will be different. You will still need to process these files to remove the duplicate frames, but this is a good first step.

OMG, I tried this with notepad and now my whole drive is unreadable and I've lost all my files and I'm screwed forever.

Not really, but I think you guessed this.

Thats absolutely spot on David. You're a credit to the industry!
Please keep up the exceptional work.

Thanks yet again.

David, we spoke on the phone today and this is the thread that refers to DV Rack stripping the extra frames and who to talk with:

With CineForm and DV Rack acquired files ultimately being compatible, I am about to go buy a PAL HVX.

Milezee: Do you have the USB Broadcast Doggle when useing Edius 4.0. I have no problem with Edius 4.0 and HVX footage footage shot with DVC Rack. Today I shot some test footage 1080/60 and 720/24p and mixed it on the timeline in Edius 4.0
DVC Rack has performed well in my test so far. I even shot some footage with my old JVC HDR10 in 720p and it handled it also. I brought it into Edius Pro 3.61 Broadcast with no problem.

No, I was trying the demo in the hope that it would open my DVC rack captured avi. Thanks to David I can now use the files in my usual Premiere/Cineform setup.

I think the v4 demo is not DVCPRO HD media enabled when the v3 demo was. Can anyone else confirm this? Of course, the registered/dongled product is happy with DVCPRO HD.
