hey guys.
I'm a young filmmaker and I posted a couple of my shorts on youtube not to long ago, and I would love some feedback, or comments, or love, or hate.
So here are some links. Both are shot on a DVX.
Thanks a million.

I checked out the DVX shorts. I like the way you've gone about creating characters. That is one of the stronger elements in those shorts. The guy with the tape recorder; the jerk pizza boss, they stand out. I would recommend to look for stories with more focused objectives that allow more conflict. "Hi... I'm new" has a simple premise but there isn't a lot of conflict in the piece. The same can be said for 'Surf for Turf', I understand he has very little time to get the pizza delivered but the consequences don't feel real or all that threatening. Whereas you've created likeable characters that are funny and quirky, I'm not emotionally invested in them.

Production wise; camera work was good and sound was good which allowed me to just listen and watch the story. I say you've got the production side down for the most part, just look for some stories and ideas that will allow us to get more invested in your characters and their problems.

yeah i watched the first on and i liked it alot I though the cuts where clean and it kept me watching to see what was going to happen i really like the cut away to the ledge with bird was feeling that. I thought the content was good too. I am looking into getting a dvx100 did u choose not to use a film like look and go with a more video look or how does that work. I am tryin to learn as much about he cam as possible.

thanks

As someone who is very bad at professional filmmaking at the moment, i can tell you that getting that film look you're talking about is a lot harder than you might imagine. A lot of it comes from good post and the use of 35mm adapters. The first short I shot on the DVX looks nowhere close to film quality, save for about one shot that was just blind luck, zooming in, and some color curve tweaking.

That said, I liked the style in these things. IT actually looked pretty good, some parts had an "Almost Sunny in Philadelphia" feel.

I really wish movie theaters worked that way. It took me a while to get a job at a theater, and when i got there i learned no one actually liked movies. Bummer.

Cool stuff though. I like little shorts that show you're working. I wish i could pump those out.

Hey, thanks again for the feedback.

So for the film look. The version posted on youtube is a horrible version (quality wise) of the film. The real version looks a lot more crisp, but still. It is very hard to get that great look. I have gotten it on a few times, and its by non-stop adjustments.

35mm = yes. I am on the way to purchase mine, because it looks amazing. The focus is a lot more gentle, and you have to always work with it, and it also gives the image a softer look. But regardless for quality it is a great investment .
