short short

Re: short short

Watched the 10 second "short". I laughed. Watched it again. I laughed again. Showed it to my friends. They laughed.

I have no guilt about my sense of humor. Violence can be a very funny thing when it's staged. Gruesome, shocking, unexpected- it all serves to make the (fake) violence funnier.
Take the (possibly) fake Ford commercials where the car's sun roof cuts off a curious cat's head. I thought it was wildly funny. Even my friends were a little taken aback by it, but they still laughed.

So, when you watch a comedic piece and laugh then it worked for you.
If not then you should keep looking for something else to laugh at. This clip was not witty, clever, nor well produced. But some of us laughed and so its mission was accomplished. Sue me. Laughing is hardly a waste of breath, but complaining...

Do your own. Make fun of this, then. This is an opportunity for creative competition. Who are we to give up a creative opportunity?? Hell, a spoof alone would take ten minutes to shoot if you want the same look. That's about as long as I've spent writing this post.

It's probably a moot point by now, as this clip is like a fart in the wind compared to the other incredibly well made and more universally acceptable comedic clips around.

Re: short short

I find it offensive when people calls me a beeatch! I'm Asian and I hear and see some of the most rascist shiat out there and I just dust my sholders off and shake it like a salt shaker. Now if I feel threaten of anykind I'll bust my Bruce Lee skills on them. Lighten up folks, Peace!

Re: short short

If there are women out there who find this offensive then by all means feel free to speak out. I think it would bring a different dimension to this argument and it would be nice to hear from all sides. This is a public forum and that's what's great about this place. You have free reign to speak your word. :)

Like I said, I don't find the video offensive, but do understand why others do. In the end, it's all just opinions. You cannot deem this "offensive" for all of us since all of us will react to it differently. Also, you are right about it being poorly produced BUT it DID make me (as well as others) laugh which I think justifies its existence. My 2 extra pence.

Re: short short

I thought my opinion that it wasnt very funny would be written off to the fact that I am a female, but now I know it would be because I'm 30+. :) There are random and spontaneous moments in life and in film that when observed are funny and hilarious, and even though someone might get hurt, you just cant help but to find the humour. A ten second clip of a guy purposefully walking up to a woman and punching her in the face, with no sense of context to the viewer just isnt funny...to me, no matter how unexpected that moment might be. But that is just me. I dont want to tread on anyone's sense of creativity. Hell, I liked the Pepsi spec commercial that got ripped. ;D

Re: short short

Have y'all seen 'way of the gun'? It has a pretty funny opening sequence... very much like this short. Is it the same humor? Is Christopher Macquire a pig? Why is water blue?

No, a 14ish year old kid on these forums posted a video, where he acted like a retard (in speech, he was pretty much motionless otherwise...)

Re: short short

Alright, you guys want to know what this is REALLY all about.  I'll let you in on something.  The point of this was to make 10 second films that depict the climax of a movie, giving no backround to the movie or no hints to the plot.  If that ONE scene did not do just that, then I can't imagine what would.

In fact, I'm almost hesitant to see if other DVX users here could do just what this film was intended to do.  No, not promote female violence, that's garbage and you know it.  But I wonder how many here could make a 10 second film that actually gets your attention, gets you to think, makes you ask... "Now why in the hell did it lead up to that?!"  Because if there's one thing I know about film it's that it doesn't need to be formulaic.  There aren't guidelines, there are no boundries.  And God help us all if we can't make a 10 second film that could actually generate thoughts in your head.  "No no, 10 seconds isn't even nearly enough time to do that." So all I ask is this...

Watch it again, and try it yourself.  See if you could do "better".  Heck post em on the internet and give us links so we can see if you want.

*4 Pages And Counting*

Because a challenge like this, is nowhere as easy as you think.

This my friends is hype... and it's time you found that out...

Re: short short

I can't imagine anyone would want to promote female violence and I have no doubt you had any intention of doing so.  Rich Lee summed it up best when he said "taken out of context" and I agree with that.

I can imagine a hundred other scenes that would 'depict the climax of a story' other than this however and thats not to say they would be a better or worse idea.

I do have to agree with you as I too, highly doubt any DVXusers here could do anything remotely as clever as this. At least I am hesitant to think. (sarcasm intended)

How many here could get 'ones' attention in 10 seconds.  Hmmmm, I don't know; maybe one or two of us?  I mean if we were lucky or stole a good idea.

But thanks for the little secret and making us aware of the hype there, Mr. Saaauve Dooooggg.

What, you're kidding, right?

Look, I make no apologies for my assessment of that piece.  Some agree, some don't.  That's fine.  That's good.  That's art.  But coming in here and insulting the sum of the membership of this board?  Do you really think that's a good way to go?

I also make no apologies for being over 30, and you young hipsters may just find, as you get older and mature, that some the things you find funny now might just embarrass you later.

Re: short short

Unlike, lincoln log, looks like i'm going to take the path of both Apologies and Excuses.

Well... I directed and thought of the concept for the piece so I guess, I should post my reaction to everyone's post. First off... I find it absurd, that it's created so much discussion. I didn't find it very controversial or offensive at all... And am really surprised that people do in a "so called' desensitized world.

Let me explain the concept of this type of short.

Here are some basics... The footage can only be 10 seconds long.
And it has to appear that it was taken out of a larger piece, feature length even. So the context, that surrounds the piece is meant to be missing.

Now here's what we had working against us.
Due to scheduling and conflicts we had to shoot between courses on campus, with ACTORS we HAD just recruited and to make matters worse it was raining. We had 15 minutes to shoot.

Biggest issue why it looks so bad... Shutter speed was accidentally set to 24. That + HANDCAM = bogus.

That said… I guess trying to justify the poor production values, which pretty much equates to lack of time, let me forget about that, we could of done better and we know it, but I don‘t think that‘s the issue here. Le me move onto CONTENT.

I did not intend this to be funny. SO if you don’t find it funny, good, it’s not meant to be. I just intended it to be hardcore enough to get a reaction out of people since the clip is INTENDED to be the most hardcore moment of a feature length film. And obviously, this is a film with poor production values I agree, and probably horrible acting, but these are the ten seconds that redeem it, that make it worth watching. All the nonsense leading up to it, forget it, put it on the cutting room floor. Why not REMOVE all the other content, and just present the most hyped 10 seconds. Considering it was mandate for this project. It wasn’t a choice.

But on another note, I really want to thank DVXuser members for their work that inspired us to get two DVX’s. Yes, I know were a lot younger than most of the members, and that many of you feel this clip does not show a maturity level, but I think that it was all circumstantial due to the limitations we had. I look forward to showing some other work on here and really learning.

As for Suave Dog, challenging you all to make something in the same format, I don’t think he’s actually ever checked out the work on here, and has no idea about the professionalism and level of quality of the users on here which quite frankly is something to strive for, for us. But if he’s instigating more competitive 10 second shorts… then I’m all for it. Cause I LOVE the format. And no I wasn’t that happy with how ours turned out. But seeing all the reaction (positive and negative), I realize it can’t be that bad.

I also make no apologies for being over 30, and you young hipsters may just find, as you get older and mature, that some the things you find funny now might just embarrass you later.

And this... is SOOO true.

Re: short short

Excellent post! I’m very glad it wasn’t meant to be funny. That changes the disposition of it considerably.

Re: short short

Agh! ::)

I don't care anymore! It was good, it was bad, it was... whatever!!

Re: short short

People please! Can't we all just get along? :'( Whether you think this video is pointless or is pure genius, THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS.... "Starring" was spelled incorrectly in the closing credits. Get your priorities staight! ;D

Re: short short

Aw, dammit, now that just ruined it for me! Starring... ARGH!!! I can't stand to watch it again... wait, no... watching it again.

Put it in slowmo with Adagio for Strings playing. That ups the drama. I feel a tear.

We have to start a new topic dedicated to 10 second shorts. I actually have space with my ISP to support it! We can all do 10 seconds of ANYTHING! Comedy, Drama, Horror, Thriller... anything but porn, really. Not only can we all show off a teeny tiny bit of our work, but who doesn't like a little creative assignment- something to get focused on. And even a guy like me can focus on 10 seconds.

I'd start the topic, but I have to think up the most genius 10 seconds possible.
