FS7: Short film with FS7 : RAW + 7Q or Xavc I ? (4K24p)

Hi everyone

I shot my first short last year using my FS7 and renting a XDCA+ Odyssey 7Q. I had a few problems that I posted here :

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...Q-for-Raw-4K-DCI-Do-I-have-a-workflow-problem

and

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...epency-between-XAVC-internal-and-RAW-external

To sum up, the linear RAW of the Sony made the data distribution uneven, and might be problematic for dark shots (that led to a lot of noise), and there was a timecode discrepancy between the internal xavc (proxys) and raw files (CDNG).

One year later, are these problems still there ? All the scenes are going to be recorded at night (most of them inside a bar).

The question I'm asking is should I still shoot RAW anyway, or should I consider XAVC-I ?
I am planning to shoot 4K 23.976 except if the new firmware is out before (so I can do true 24p).

As a sidenote, I own the FS7 but will have to rent the XDCA and 7Q. So if the difference is slim, I will go xavc.

And last question, do you believe a FS7 is "cinematic" enough (given good lighting condition) to have a great picture for short features ?

Thanks a lot

François

About "cinematic" look, I've understood that many use diffusion filters to get away from the digital video look from modern camera. If go on Vimeo here, Schneider Optics recently posted many test shots with their diffusion filters. Very informative, at least for me.

FS7's raw, for all the fixes, isn't worth the hassle.
Hi ben. That is a very clear answer. Thank you. :-) I was looking for that kind of thoughts from a knowledgable DP.

any use diffusion filters Claude

Hi Claude. Yes we are definitely looking into that right know. I've been watching thoses videos, and it seems that the Schneider Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 and 1/4 can help. But it is very hard for me to tell the difference in thoses heavily crompressed videos...
