Short Film: Vocem Deserto

Hello everyone. Here's a piece I had some fun with recently. We shot on the AF100, and as the DP I wanted to use it as an opportunity to explore the limits of the camera's low-light capabilities and dynamic range. In my opinion, the camera performed admirably (forgive Vimeo not agreeing with my blacks, I'm working to get a more optimized version uploaded), and I'm quite pleased with how the images turned out, especially in the effects shots.

Oh, and most things in the dark segment were shot at 1600 ISO at a 2/2.8 split with either the match or a 60-Watt lightbulb as the primary light source.

Anyway, it was a ton of fun to shoot. Hope you guys get a kick out of it, and any feedback on the visual side of things is welcome!

Loved it!!! It almost seems like a study of extreme lighting conditions, between the underpass with slashes of sunlight, the lighter/lightbulb scenes, and the beach- but they all look great!

I love the peeling paint textures, too!

What Gamma? Did you use the lenses from your sig?

Nice job of cast, crew and camera!!!

Yup, I shot with the lenses in my sig. The wides were the 14mm end of the 14-42, and a lot of the other stuff was shot with the 35mm and 45mm Minoltas (I think we only used the 55mm for one shot). Freelance cinematography is a secondary gig for me, so lens budget has always been quite limited and freelance income always seems to end up in places other than camera gear (Some Contax Zeiss primes are next since I recently paid off the AF100). It was a matter of doing the best I could with what I can afford - hopefully I'll get better glass soon! On that note, though, I do have to say that I love my Minolta primes! :)

The Gamma was B-Press and it was a pretty standard low-light scene file setting (Detail/VDetail -4, Coring +2ish, Norm2 Matrix). Technically I could've used Cine D for the outside stuff, but I figured I'd keep things consistent between locations - the look seemed to fit the mood of the piece throughout at any rate.

I appreciate the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!

Great Job, not being critical but what's with the bloopers at 2:29 (fingers bottom right of screen) also I would had added light movement after 4:35 this is missing on the back of the and face of the subjects, even if momentarily it would had added more impact to the shot.
Overall a great little story, well done!

Wow! I totally missed the fingers when I composited that shot. Hmm... perhaps I need my eyesight checked. :)

Thanks for pointing it out!
