Short Film "To Kill A Meter Maid"

Hey
Really good stuff. Good storyline and actors.. I liked it. I was hoping the cabbie was going to spike him with the weasel.

Funny and crazy, I like it, good story.
I felt like the scene with the wife was a bit long. Then it became tighter and tighter.
I loved the cab guy, the metermaid was great to.
Technically the light looks very basic. When the story's good I think you forget quickly about it. There were also a few jumps in the background sound in the beginning.
The new sorenson/flash is very good. I don't if it's just on my machine but I often had a sound synch problem.
What camera settings did you use? Did you alter the color in post?

liked it. very cool story indeed.

lighting was too dark in some spots (ie. can't see the face of the man eating that steak in teh beginning)

overall, enjoyed it. good job!

it was hard to watch because it froze every 15-20 seconds or so for me but the story kept me watching. I didn't really like the beginning with the wife but the rest was REALLY awesome. Visually I didn't find it to be especially impressing but it was solid enough. the story was really bizarre and funny and intriguing. I think you should send that into some sort of festival because it could have a good chance. Its kind of rare that i actually enjoy shorts, I always appreciate them but don't often enjoy them, this one was different. I look forward to seeing more work from you in the future

 It was waaayyy cool! The sound was a little shaky in spots but over all it was well done!

I liked it. It just seemed like there were some unmotivated handheld camera shots. The acting was good and the ending was nice. You need a lot of help with the ADR :) Great short.

Not directly a comment about the film, but the video and audio weren't synced for me, which was a bit distracting at first.

As others said, I thought the story was strangely funny. I thought it was a little weird that the cabbie accepted Albert's fate so easily, though ... but good job. Maybe next time, with a single overhead light source, ask your actor to remove the hat. :)

That's a funny short you've got there. The sound syncing issues were probably from the flash video player so I'll ignore that problem. The story is interesting enough to keep my attention. The first section with the wife was a little long but funny. I can see it would have been hard to let any part of it go. The editing is good. The lighting needed a little work, especially in the basement. But probably not noticeable by people not looking for problems. The shots are done well. The handheld shots weren't too jumpy or distracting to me. The acting is good. I liked the main character the best.

Nice work!

Thanks for the feedback . . .

Thanks for the feedback . . .

First of all . . . .
Thankyou for your feedback it is valuable . . . very

Like most of you we had no budget . . .
except for this wonderful camcoder and anamorphic lens . . . so we had that much
which is a ton . . . I loved working with the camera and wide lens a 24p . . . it was very fun.

We shot this in two days and I edited it in a week or so . . . all the lighting was sparse . . . the bedroom scene was lit the most but every other scene was with the exsiting lighting . . . The shoot was harried at best . . . the actors stellar . . . and production value poor . . .
I wish I had $10,000.00 to sink into a production . . . we spent $1,200.00 and that included meals, video tape, cab, everything . . .

I just put the camera in 24p mode and did the best I could as a one man band . . .
I love the DVX-100 . . . but to create a pro look and sound you need the people . . .

Once again I am really stocked that you all like the story . . . Thank You for your feedback . . .

So how many were you on the crew?

Come on! You don't spent that much energy on a project if you don't believe in it. The story is the most important thing and you had it right. You managed to often crack open the gap between result and expectation and that's why it works.
There was a lot of humour, the "who's the man at home?" was hilarious to name just one.
I have no doubt you'll make it into festivals.
I would just have added a nastier sound effect on the last frame.
Concerning the actors how did you cast them?

like everyone else is saying, hard to find decent shorts. most just leave you with the "wft" feeling. this was actually entertaining. good job bro.
i was wondering about your sound. i'm assuming the synch probs were the flash thing so if this was the live sound what was your sound capture setup? and if it was adr what was the setup anyways.

thanks for making a good short!!!

Thankyou . . ."That's a Garden Weasle Man"

Thanks for the feedback . . .The Flash Codec is making the synch between Audio and video pretty bad . . . I love your website and you short . . . "A Happy Wedding" The Quality is high . . .

Thankyou for your feedback and encouragement

Great! Feedback . . . The audio and video were just OK at best . . . alot of times I had an actor hold the boom or reflector card . . . it was fun because the script was funny . . . actors eager . . . and it was done within two weeks . . . Thanks for your kind words

safarijoe
Thankyou . . . the sound is shaky . . .

Robert86
Thanks for your comment . . . ADR? What is that? "Audio Digital Recording"?
Alot of times I had who was ever around at the time hold the Boom so getting the best quality audio was hard . . . Thanks for your response . . . greatly appreciated

The Flash video codec seems to lose synch . . . the compressed file took 6 hours on a G5 and it looks dark on the computer sreen but it looks OK on DVD. Yeah I would have spent alittle extra time with the lighting . . . next project . . . shooting this in a weekend and running around from scene to scene it was hard to direct the actors let alone sound and lighting . . . I am glad you liked the short . . . thanks

HansK
Flash Video Player exactly . . .Thank you for your feedback . . . Your Egg #9 is funny! . . .

Yeah I am lucky to have a bunch of talented actors who work hard at the craft around me . . . I hope to have a budget where I can reward them with actual money in the future projects . . . Howard Meehan is a talented writer . . .

VizPictures
The Main Crew Consisted of Me(Camera/Lighting/Directing) Chris Meehan(Co Director/Actor-rehearsing with talent during takes) Brian Clothier(Location Sound/Music-He was there 50% of the time because he was busy with other projects but when he was there it make a giant diffrence) Howard Meehan (Writer/Actor-Howard was the utility man but was not very experienced with sound so we did are best . . .)

That was the main crew . . . we had others that would drop by and hold the boom, make food, watch traffic . . .

I bekeive in Meter Maids . . .just would have like to have a budget . . .even a small on . . . Your Production Value was Very High . . .

A nastier SFX is needed on the last frame . . . thanks for your feedback . . . I am going to look at "The Hook" when I get a moment . . .

Johnny Cola
Thanks for your Feedback
My sound setup was a Rode N1 mic on a long micstand . . . not the best but the shotgun mic I bought died before the shoot started . . . What is ADR? Sorry for my ignorance . . . I just went right into the DVX-100 XLR in puts

Thanks for your positive feedback

I had the same question about ADR. These acronyms are killing me. Apparently it means "Automated Dialogue Replacement", or dubbing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubbing
If that's it, I don't get what Robert meant in terms of "help with the ADR". He had the same kind of comment for my short the "wedding". I'm still waiting for his precisions in that thread.
