short film: the little match girl

the shots seem to drag on really long and the pace was very slow. i liked the scene on the steps where each match made her grandmother appear, but i'm suprised it made it that far into the movie, because the beginning was quite boring. overall it was very nicely shot but it could have been shown in half the time.

pretty cool stuff.

i really enjoyed the colour change, made it much more pleasing ot the eye and made it much more easy to follow the story.

now. A few things i was not too fond of was some of the framing, a little too much head space in a few of them. Was that filmed in 30 fps? had more of a video look to it for some reason. Not so much when it was colorful but the black and white?

Was she, or he ( lol ) wearing a wigg?

it was 3o fps. it was a wig and that is one of the things i would go back and change. I hate that wig.
what do you mean by head space?

thanks for the feed back.

im getting some time grabs to show you exactly. ill edit them in once ive written them down.

What i would like to see is that movie reframed after letterboxing.

here are some of the frames that i didnt really favor.

1:53 -> 2:05 ( would have liked more than one angle ) a shot of the actors faces is vital for the audience to feel any emotion. If we dont see the character feel, the audience doesnt feel. ( as an actor )

3:12, and 3:18 didnt write it down but i remember there being a lot of head space. ( area of film just above the subjets head. ) empty space.

and finally, the splitt screen effect. The line was easily viewable and the from each side did not match ( or the light and contrast ratios )

i would love to play with that footage :)

ill try to post the raw footage of the split screen later... if i can find it deep with in the archives of my cardboard box full of tapes... (lol) thanks for the specifics papa. about the bad contrast ratios... i tried to fix it my self when i was editing but in the half with the girl in it she is wearing the blanket which is very reflective. when the grandmother comes in she is wearing a black coat so the camera recorded different amounts of light.

thanks again

DO dig the titles playing off of scenery.
DON'T dig the B&W.
DO dig the narrator.
DON'T DIG the wig.
DO dig the balls you must have had to shoot it in broad daylight in NYC (I assume that's hard to do without interruptions).

Hey jim,

I really liked it actually. It was daring to make a short film with basically zero action or comedy. Sure the wigs bad, but that doesnt really mess it up. As far as shots that go on forever.....i love that. I hate rediculous quick edits....

good job sir.

It is nice to see an adaptation of Andersen's The little match girl.
I couldn't really watch properly cause the compression was really bad and my VLC player kept crashing.

Not a big fan of Black and White, but this was not a bad flick you put together. It does take a bit to get into, so I think it could be shorter.

Is this based on the The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen? I was nice that you kept it black and white. Music seemed appropiate. The acting on the other hand, specially the grandmother and the guy yelling and hitting her, were fairly poor. Perhaps pushing the contrast a little more. Brighter brights, darker blacks would make the images more interesting. The audio was ok, but definately ambient sounds would help.Maybe the sound of wind, footsteps, etc. All in all, a good effort.
