Short film shot with F35

I love the way this was shot, the beach scenes mostly, the grade was awesome, it's cool to see how well this camera holds the highlights, I would say the f35 is still my fav image in terms of digital acquisition. it's so damn reminiscent of film. nice work man, my only critique was the sound design, if your daring enough to put in a scene of a dog getting hit, at least sell the shot and add the yelp of the dog.

Outstading Barrett. Thanks for posting those. Will check them out.

I really like the images from the F35. Not a low light camera at all but I plan to maybe getting a F3 for that. Not sure I can live with the F35 noise for all I do or if clients will. I had one complaining about noise in daylight footage which was barely there.

But I'm now officially looking for a good deal on a F35. But I have to decide if I want to pay for the original EVF or just use one of the after market ones. Also have to find a complete one with the IF box and all.

A little off topic, but I was at a dealer this week who had a Blackmagic 4K on display. I have to say it is very tempting to get one and there are more reasons to get one than to not, regardless if you have a F35 or not. The thing is just dirty cheap, specially if you have a business and can write the taxes off. It costs less than most camera accessories and does probably 90% of what an Epic, F55 or even F35 does. It is not a case of which, you can have both the F35 and the BMD 4K. It's cheap! For people who have to start from scratch I know the price is misleading. But if you already have accessories and rigs for another camera chances are you are set. If you have your F35 rigged up you have the BMD 4k too. Like the F35 the BMD 4k is just a box. I know it has external switches but this is not what I mean. I for example would have basically everything I need for it including power. I would maybe have to buy the cable. Tempting indeed and I would not want to be a camera manufacturer competing with Blackmagic.

SJX

I would recommend getting the BMCC 4k and see how that fits your preference. If you still have the F35 bug afterwards then sell the BM and get an F35.

SJX, you seem to be quite concerned about low light shooting--I think you'll be pretty disappointed with the BMC4K in that regard. But it's a good option to help you decide if you really want to use production-style cameras because it's relatively inexpensive.

SJX: you seemed to be thinking out loud the decision making process to purchase the camera. To me it was an easy decision: either I can afford it or I can't. Your posts might not be off topic or violating any of the rules but they make the thread cluttered with unnecessary and repeated information. We're trying to have a concise and helpful knowledge base of the camera here and pretty much what you asked had already been mentioned before in one of the threads, let's not 1-digress, 2-trying to have people to convince you to get the camera. Only you know what works for you. -With all due respect.

Did you miss this part of my last post? :

I already made the decision. I don't need any convincing.

Jon, yes I'm concerned about low light. But for this I would buy a F3 I think. At least keep it in the sony family and make it easier to match the F35, at least I guess?

The BMC4k would be basically an add on, just because its so cheap that it is almost stupid not to buy it and it comes with Resolve too. Really, I've been thinking and it's basically hard to find a reason not to buy it, LOL. It could come in handy for some projects as well and clients who may request 4K. I don't know. If nothing else it's a good camera for when you need to travel or shoot discreetly or just a toy camera to play around. But I wasn't thinking about buying it for low light. I know the BMC4K seems to be as bad as the F35 in this regard. Like I said, I would probably go F3 for that. But first I will get a F35 and see for myself how it does in low light. If I see a need I will add a F3 later.

SJX: fair enough :) just FYI on the BMC 4K though, a friend of mine had one and it exploded on his hands - he was OK, the footage and SSD drive weren't. He wasn't the guy that posted the video of an exploded BMC 4k on youtube, it happened 2 weeks after I showed him that video. Be informed about this problem because it's your welfare and your money too :) That guy did get a replacement camera from Black Magic but it sits on the table now as a paperweight.

I used to be head over heels for those Black Magic cameras but their quality control could use a major improvement. I'm sure there're many people who have the BMC's and have been very happy with them too, so weigh your options based on the minority whose cameras didn't work for them too.

Also the F35 was designed as a digital film-replacement camera, so I think we should use it accordingly, that is to light things properly like you would with film. I believe this opinion has been stated again and again on this forum already.

Yes I know and I have stated again and again that not every client can afford the grip truck. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

About the BMC battery explosion, I'm sure these are isolated accidents. I have a hyperdeck shuttle which as far as I know uses the same battery and in 2 years of continue use haven't had any problems of explosions. I have only heard of this one youtube guy. Who knows what he did to get it to explode. Or who knows, maybe he works for a competitor camera company and the whole thing is a hoax to mess blackmagic. LOL.

If it was really that serious or general we would have heard of more cases by now. But batteries exploding happens. Ask any RC car enthusiast and they will tell you some stories.

Yet again off topic, what's up with AJA's new global shutter, 4K S35 sensor camera with a PL mount, high frame rates and recoding to prores 4444 all for $9K? Things are getting very interesting in the camera market by the day now.
