Short film shot with F35

Finally able to show this :)

No nudity but I wouldn't say it's SFW.

The original can be downloaded on Vimeo if preferred.

For those of you interested in the swappable Nikon plate we (Dave and I) have been working on, we haven't stopped, don't worry! Just trying to find out the best way to implement the aperture lever into the design without clunkiness.

Nice work Barrett, ****ed up film but very nicely shot. You guys have such amazing weather out there, I'm very jealous!

What lenses and settings? I particularly liked the lighting on the final shot in the bar, plus the camera's unfailing ability to absolutely nail skin tones, every time.

Aw shucks, thanks guys :)

Lenses... as far as I remember it was a Nikkor 50mm 1.4 and a Sigma 20mm 1.8, I think the only time we used anything else was for the walking shot where 'guy' has just gotten out of his car (and also maybe some b-roll), that was this old 135mm 2.8 lens I bought off ebay forever ago for 30 bucks and don't even know the make. For settings I kept the gain at 450 the whole time (I think in Cine mode), even experimented with overexposing the beach scenes a little bit (apart from the shot of the waves) to see how the camera would handle it. NEVER would have tried that with any past camera I've owned but felt confident the F35 would handle it nicely and it did :)

+1 on the skin tones!

The daylight shots look absolutely gorgeous! Congrats!

The low light sutff is hard to judge as the vimeo 1080p download was ridden with noise and macroblocking.

It's in the wide shots that the F35 starts showing it's age. The establishing shot of the apartments looked quite soft. Not really actually. It's just that in this world of F55s, F65s, Epics and even Alexas we are getting used to ultra sharp wide shots. This is the only time 4K makes really any difference.

Overall, gorgeous day shots and compositions. Nicely done.

I would definitely not judge the camera's sharpness based on this video. In wides, this camera is still stunning - I have done some very rough (and unscientific) comparisons between this and the RED "4K" and you would be hard pressed to tell.

There is definitely no resolution loss against the ALEXA, I would argue under the right conditions it is higher real resolution. I tend to find on wides you are more likely to come against the limit of lenses, they are usually harder to design and often don't perform as well esp. wide open, unless you happen to have a master prime.

Strong stuff. I have to say I found the really shaky stuff right at the start hugely distracting, the handheld-iness of it really drew attention to itself, but after that settled down, I think most of the film played beautifully.

Really appreciate all the feedback and criticisms, it does the body good - particularly from this crowd! Very many thanks.

Justin: Not too much of an issue with noise but I happen to find the F35's noise pattern very pleasing so take that with a grain of salt I suppose; my threshold is probably higher than some. But in general I've found the F35 to render light in a way that's not too different from the human eye in that when it's dark, it looks dark. Some of the modern low-low-light CMOS sensors can see an incredible amount but a lot of the time to my eye it doesn't look natural, for lack of a better term.

SJX - Thanks so much! Definitely follow James' words here, the camera is incredibly sharp but the wide lens I was using was the 20mm 1.8 Sigma which is pretty soft at most apertures. [Edit: Anh beat me to it!] And I'm allergic to using post sharpening having been unwillingly subject to it in-camera most of my life ;)

If anybody would like me to upload any Prores clips (graded or ungraded) I can do so, just let me know which shot(s).

Barrett, it would be great to see any of the low light shots in ProRes full rez.

Well, here is a list I would love to see the original shots in ProRes :) :

  • Toilet shot (00:50)
  • Sun into the lens (01:04)
  • Looking into the ocean (01:50)
  • Laptop in dark kitchen (02:33)
  • Car pulling over (3:06)
  • Two shot (2:39)
  • Apartments external (04:49)
  • Dog waiting in the dark (07:40)
  • Dark kitchen (08:00)
  • Bar shot (11:37)

Sorry if I went overboard. If so I would be happy with any of them you would to post.

About the sharpness, it makes sense the lens is playing the biggest role there. Would be interesting to see a master prime wide shot with the camera.

That's great to hear James. Are you able to post these frames?

Sadly not, but if you do the maths you'll realise the F35 has 20% more pixels going into its frames than the original RED did. So it isn't that hard to believe - look at any RED footage at 100%, it is pretty soft.

I would say the overwhelming majority of theatres these days still only display 2k/1080.

Did you know that according to Kodak a cinema release print only contained (approx) 1.4K of resolution?

SJX

Look at my F35 at night thread, I have updated it with some high res clips and screens from the short I posted.

Well, yes. Soft but high resolution. Also, it's a 4K frame. What I mean by that is, you can't really zoom in on a F35 frame as much as you can on a RED frame when delivery for 1080p. Even if the perceived sharpness is similar.

But I didn't ask to see frames because I doubt you. I'm genuinely curious. :)

Go see the F35 at night thread - there's a couple of frames there. Not wides, but they are from night shoots.

I'll try and dig out some wides for you if I can but not sure I have any full res ones kicking about

That would be great James! Specially if shot with your Zeiss. Many of the clips floating around have been shot with still lenses, probably cheaper glass, which may be the cause of the softness.

Here are the Prores HQ files you requested SJX, all ungraded. I trimmed them so file size wasn't too much of an issue, only 100-200MB each or so.

Sorry about the ads for the downloads, going to get a premium host for stuff like this soon but trying to figure out which to go for.
