The cut was finished ages ago, but they've only recently seen fit to publish it. Any comments welcome.

P.S. Apologies for sound on the interior interview. Despite my asking it quickly became clear that there were no other spaces available in the building, and even the lapel couldn't make it sound good.

great story and very nice footage.
Can you tell us a little about the conditions (team, production) and technical background (lenses, codec etc.) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks very much for the kind words folks! Here are some of the details of the production.

I travelled to Ghana alone as a self-shooting director with a basic FS7 kit (Metabone SB, Tamron 24-70 IS, Canon 28-300 L, Canon 16-35 L, Zacuto universal VCT, Senny radio mics, Ambient TinyMic shotgun, tripod). I shot the whole thing internally in 1080p25 XAVC-I. The 'establishing' shot was taken handheld (but braced to the door) from a car window moving at about 30mph, with the camera capturing 180fps I think. I actually had several other of this style of shot in the initial edit, but they were lost during client feedback/trimming. I'm pretty sure that this shoot happened just prior to FW_4.0, so everything was shot in S35 mode, uncropped. The other slo-mo shots were from a tripod at around 300mm, again at 180fps.

I think that shooting in Slog3 helped me a lot with this one, because the equatorial sun gave a lot of DR in most scenes. I've also pulled significant additional contrast and saturation out of some of the more twilight scenes (people walking up from the river), but the negs have held up pretty well I reckon.

My biggest regret for the project is the IV audio. Whilst it's not terrible, I really wish the main IV from Kwame (M/C founder/CEO) was crisper. One of the biggest and most frequent challenges of shooting in the developing world IME is that it's so bloody loud in the cities!

Any other more specific questions just shout. Cheers!

thanks Jason. Did you edit and grade as well?
Sure did. Probably about 30% of my work is one-man-band from brief to delivery, in roughly this format. Of the rest, it's about 40/30 freelance DoP / freelance editor. Grade was in Premiere with Lumetri as I recall. I normally only use Resolve when there are extensive secondaries required, and/or tracked mattes, as those are a PITA in Premiere.

Cheers,

jason

Very well done, good music choice too. I found that to fit very well.

Shame about the audio on that inside interview, i hate being stuck in that type of scenario too. The long lens slow motion shot - where the people turn back to camera, man that was just great!
