Short Film First Footage

Here are a few clips of ungraded footage from a short film I shot last week called THE BAD TIMES.

Shot in 3 days using the AF100 and Zeiss Compact Primes.

The only lights used (besides the practicals) were GE Tungsten Bulbs. 60 watt. 25 watt. and a flex fill for a shot or two.

I know I'll get some flack for the blown highlights in the first hotel room shot, but I don't mind them too much. Ditto for the small amount of noise I got in the shadows. I didn't want to over light the project, so I let some space fall into darkness. Also, I NEEDED to travel light (in the Hotel Room).

No sound. Looks nice though. A lot of the images are very flat, but I really like the bartender shot at 6 seconds. His exposure with a little contrast on the right side of his face is really nice.

I liked the hotel room stuff, since it actually looked lit. But the bar stuff was very flat for my tastes.

How did you like working with the AF-100 on the shoot? Run into any problems?

Thanks Papa. I shot the bar scene fairly flat, but in my defense, the shot of them at the table and the first shot of her are the two flattest shots in the movie.

vic777: I'm aware that it doesn't look slick and polished. I suppose I could add a smoothcam filter onto it, and probably will do so, but a bit of shake doesn't ruin a shot for me.

Rob: In reference to the flat images, like I said above, I picked the flattest shots possible to upload. Don't really know why! I wanted to make sure not to over-light the bar. Whenever I see independent films the bars are either WAY TO HIGH KEY or SUPER SUPER MOODY with shafts of light casting on people's faces in the darkness. No bar I've ever been to looks like that, so I was just trying to light it as I saw it, adding accents where I could.

No real problems. Actually, I really enjoyed working the camera. Especially though, the compact primes. I had never worked with cinema lenses before and the ability to accurately pull focus made shooting a breeze.

i know what you mean about the bar thing in most indie films, i had a tough time in my last short with the bar scene in terms of lighting. yours looks like it could be adjusted in post in terms of exposure and grading. i didn't think the hotel scene looked as bad as u prefaced it.
