Short Doc about a Film - need a version of the movie to use temporarily

I am working on a 30 minute special that goes behind the scenes of a hollywood movie -- supporting the anniversary of the films release. The company I am editing for has the rights to use clips from the film, but we wont get the clips right away. As a decent place holder, is there a way to download a 1080 version of the film that I can bring into AVID or PREMIERE PRO?

The company you're editing for and the rights holders should be able to help you with getting a scratch copy. If the film was released o DVD or BluRay, that might be another source.

It was released on Blu-ray and dvd. How can I rip a file from those sources that I can actually edit with? It’s also on iTunes.

as of right now, I’ve asked the for a pro res version, but they haven’t been able to provide it. Having it now would sure help us figure out the parts we will need.

I told my client there’s no easy way of doing it. He said he’d work on trying to get it for us before the edit starts. Fingers crossed. I know we will eventually get what we need, but it sure would be great having something we can rough in place. Thanks for the input. I’ll let you guys know when it’s done and where you can view it.

No easy way ripping a regular DVD/Blu-ray or one that's copy-protected?

If it's not protected, you can use HandBrake which most of us have been using for the last 20 years or so. [Make sure you're allowed to do what you'd be doing.]

You can also use it for other tasks including transcoding/converting various files/formats (i.e. from iTunes).

There are like 500 other pieces of software that all do the same thing, but HandBrake is an industry-icon (along with MPEG Streamclip, but the development on that one stopped a while ago).

Two ways come to mind:

1. Watch the movie online and use a screen capture software to record it.

2. Rip a Bluray/DVD using MakeMKV
